This work was completed during Harper's Laughing Waters residency at Boomerang House, 2001. The Laughing Waters Artist in Residence Program was run by Nillumbik Shire Council (in partnership with Parks Victoria) 2001-2015. "My painting is about colour and form, and their relationship. The picture is of the habour of Enkhuizen. Enkhuizen is is an old harbour city which has much of the atmosphere of a port city some centuries ago.Enkhuizen was one of the harbours used by the VOC (Dutch East Indies Company) as home port. With the closing off of the former Zuiderzee (South Sea), now called IJsselmeer, in the late 1930's, it lost its direct connection with the sea and became more or less a museum of the past. A gathering of widow who attended widows exercise classes at Legacy House at a restaurant called Ruby Rose. Melbourne Legacy ran an excellent exercise program for its widows for many years and the swim classes at the City Baths were very popular. The instructor for many years was Betty Luders. The Bendigo Easter Fair was established in 1871 to fundraise for the Bendigo Hospital and the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum. Donated by the Sadner family who were associated with the Bendigo Hospital, these family snap shots capture the regalia and atmosphere that the Chinese community bring to this community event. A steam kettle together with a steam tent was used to create a moist atmosphere. A steam tent was set up enclosing the whole bed by means of sheets/curtains and sometimes canvas, the kettle was heated over a gas or spirit stove, usually on the floor next to the bed, with the spout inserted inside the tent.Of significance to the AHNL as it is a tangible representation of nursing history. Steam inhalations were used to relieve patients with respiratory disorders and some drug therapy could be administered by this route.
