Photograph - Retouching Reproduction Material at the Army Survey Regiment, c1960s, c1970s
The first four photographs were most likely taken in the 1960 and the fifth in the 1970s at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. As there are no annotations with the photos, the exact dates, locations and names of personnel are unknown. SGT Bob Scaddan appears in the fifth photo taken in the 1970s Photos .1P and .2P. could have been taken in Lithographic Squadron’s retouching room and Photos .3P, .4P and .5P. were probably taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Correcting Section, located in the Attic. Retouching mainly entailed the application of liquid opaque (Plumtree), commonly known as “duff” to cover blemishes such as scratches and spots on film negatives before photographic exposure. Retouching technicians also used specialised techniques such as “needling” to repair faults on the emulsion of map reproduction material. The technician in photo .4P is needling a hydrographic feature on a drainage negative, with a zoom transfer scope projecting a scaled projected aerial photograph as a positional reference. This is a set of five photographs of technicians retouching reproduction material at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. The photographs were printed on photographic paper and are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. Photograph - Scribing at the Army Survey Regiment, c1950s to 1979
These nine photographs were taken over two decades from the late 1950s to 1979 at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. The two photos taken in 1961 are annotated with named personnel and the date. The other photos are not annotated with dates, locations and names of personnel, although the technicians in the last three photos taken in 1979 are positively identified. The photos were most likely taken in the Ballroom, Ante Room and Attic, Cartographic Squadron’s main production rooms on the top floor of Fortuna Villa. Scribing was the cartographic process of drafting topographic features such as drainage, relief, vegetation, roads and culture on specially coated map reproduction material. The cartographic technician scribed out the map feature such as a creek to a specified line width on the map sheet, using a tool affixed with a metal or sapphire tipped cutter. This is a set of photographs of technicians scribing topographic features at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. Photograph - Army Survey Regiment – Map Production, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1980s
These five photographs of map production and the car park area were taken at Fortuna, Bendigo, c1980s. The first three photographs were taken in Air Survey Squadron, where aerotriangulation and digital photogrammetric extraction of topographic features from aerial photography were undertaken. Photo .4P was taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Correcting Section, located in the Attic. The technicians were probably involved in a rapid response map production, as they all were wearing field uniforms. The Army Survey Regiment’s Duty Room, RAP and Carpark appear in Photo .5P. Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence of the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold on which a built structure was subsequently constructed as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens. The photograph is of additional aesthetic significance as it was photographed by J. E. Barnes. Josiah Earl Barnes is a nationally significant photographer. He was also the most important photographer to have worked in Kew. He was active as a photographer in the district from c.1906 until his death in 1921. Best known as 'the Embarkation Photographer' (see the Australian War Memorial collection), J. Earl Barnes was also the official photographer employed by the Borough (and later Town, then City) of Kew. Album - Album page, Glenferrie Street, 4, Circa 1972
... attics ...This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. From Glen Eira Heritage Management Plan 1996 by Andrew Ward: In 1905, most of portion 27 was vacant land, however Glenferrie Street had been formed and the land subsequently subdivided. In 1906, Robert Joseph Haddon, architect and painter, designed and built for his private residence, a brick house on the west side. Haddon named the house "Anselm". Also built on the property were a garage and fibro cement studio. "Anselm" is architecturally important at the State level as a substantially intact, highly personalised and boldly expressed house expressive the Arts and Crafts movement and incorporating Art Nouveaux enrichment in a variety of forms, the use of ornamental terra cotta tiles to the comer tower being of special note. Its importance at the State level is strengthened by its place as the home of the noted architect and Melboume's most influential exponent (Freeland, J.M., Architecture in Australia, p. 213) of the Art Nouveaux movement. Victorian Heritage Register https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/4442 What is significant? Anselm was designed by noted English born architect Robert Joseph Haddon(1866-1929) as his own house and constructed in 1906. A single storey Arts and Crafts influenced red brick house with attic, Anselm has a pyramidal slate roof with prominent chimney stacks. There is a octagonal corner tower with saucer shaped domed roof surmounted by a weather vane, and the tower has decorative terracotta panels immediately below the eaves line. The front door opens immediately into a large living or common room, screened from view by a timber and bottle glass screen. The large room was designed to function as a drawing and dining room. The house is rich with hand crafted details including door and window furniture, wrought iron gutter brackets, fireplaces (one with built in wood box), and fire tools. The interior decoration includes hand painted frieze of Port Phillip in the study, and a hand painted frieze of turbulent sea with sailing boats in the tiled bathroom. There is a small hand painted tile at the base of the tower which states ?This building was erected AD1906 from designs by Robt J Haddon FRIBA,Lond FRIVA Melb Architect?. He also designed an attic addition which was constructed in 1927. Anselm is substantially intact although the double casement window immediately to the south of the front door was originally circular....Page 61 of Photograph Album with one exterior photograph (portrait) of Anselm.Hand written: 61 [bottom left] trevor hart, anselm, art nouveaux, arts and crafts, tower, bay window, glenferrie street, robert joseph haddon, 1900's, terra cotta tiles, double storey, caulfield north, corner tower, brick house, attics -

Photograph - Digital Photograph, Marguerite Marshall, Former home of Professor William MacMahon Ball, York Street, Eltham, 24 May 2007
Situated at the eastern end of York Street, Eltham, 'Shinrone', the former home of Professor William (Mac) MacMahon Ball was one of the first in the Shire of Eltham to incorporate mud-brick. Professor MacMahon Ball, a political scientist, writer, broadcaster and diplomat and family moved to York Street, Eltham in 1945 into a timber cottage built around the 1890s and in poor repair. Mac asked Alistair Knox to renovate the home and he expanded the living area and added verandahs. In 1948 Montsalvat artist and sculptor Sonia Skipper supervised the building of most of the mud-brick studio. Neighbour Gordon Ford made the mud-bricks. Mac also asked John Harcourt, who had worked with him as a journalist in shortwave broadcasting, to build a pise (rammed earth) and stone addition to the largely timber house. Harcourt built two bedrooms - including an attic bedroom - a balcony with a shower and toilet, and a fireplace and chimney of local stone.
