This is an album of Australian official photographs of Australian participation in World War One. Enlargements of the photographs could be obtained in the 1920s from the Australian War Museum in the Exhibition Buildings in Melbourne. World War One (1914-1918) was a highly significant event, not only in world history, but also in Australian history – a time when Australia participated to a strong degree, with a great number of Australian men and women dying in the war. These photographs were important in the 1920s as they showed war scenes and military activities that were not available to the public when the war was in progress. They are still important today showing Australian military action in World War One, a signal event in Australia’s history. The number of World War One War Memorials in most Australian towns and small settlements is an indication of the effect on the Australian people of the sacrifice of the lives of so many young people. Warrnambool was just one place in Australia that built a war memorial in the 1920s and continues today to remember World War One heroes as well as those from later wars. This is a brown photograph album containing 72 black and white photographs of Australian soldiers in World War One (Gallipoli, Palestine, France etc). The photographs have been commercially produced. There are four photographs to each page mounted on card. The cover is cardboard and the pages are bound with multi-coloured string. These are two programmes of the Civic and Memorial Official Service held in the Warrnambool Town Hall on 26th May 1918. The service was held for two purposes. One was to celebrate the gazetting of Warrnambool as a city, two days earlier, on 24th May 1918. The other was to offer prayers and remember those on active service in World War One and those who had died in the war and to pray for the war to end. (World War One came to an end in the November of 1918). The service on 26th May in Warrnambool was conducted by the ministers of churches in Warrnambool and attended by the Mayor and Councillors and Council workers. A collection was taken up at the service for the British Red Cross Society. The Mayor at the time was William Swinton.This program is of considerable interest as it brings to our attention two events of importance in our history – Warrnambool becoming a city in 1918 and the city’s involvement in World War One and the long-term effects of this war on all settlements in Australia. It also highlights the importance at the time of the Christian religions in Australia.These are two copies of the programme of the 1918 Warrnambool Civic and Memorial Service. The programme is one sheet of buff-coloured paper folded in two to make four pages. There is blue printed material on three of the pages. This is a programme of the Warrnambool City Council Civic & Thanksgiving Official Service on November 1918. The service was held in the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens, conducted by the Ministers of the Churches in Warrnambool and led by the combined choirs of the churches. It was a public occasion held to offer thanksgiving for the end of World War One in November 1918. One of the hymns sung had the opening lines: ‘O God of Love, O King of Peace/Make wars throughout the world to cease’. The service was attended by the Mayor of Warrnambool and the City Councillors and Council employees. World War One was a signal event in the history of Warrnanmbool (as it was for all places in Australia) with so many young men volunteering for active service and so many dying overseas.This programme is of great interest as it records an important occasion in Warrnambool – the end of World War One and the official service of thanksgiving that commemorated this happening. This book contains World War One cartoons drawn by Captain Bruce Bairnsfather. It is one of a series of books by Bairnsfather showing that humour can be found even on the battlefields of France. The cartoons were originally published weekly in ‘The Bystander’ magazine. World War One was an horrific conflict that took so many lives and affected adversely so many others. This book is of antiquarian interest as a book dealing with World War One, a conflict that affected Warrnambool in the same way as it affected every other place in Australia. This is a programme for a Service of Intercession in Relation to the War. It was held by the Methodist Church (Victoria and Tasmania Conference) in October 1915. The Wesleyan Methodist Conference at Birmingham, England requested that Sunday October 31st 1915 be set aside as a Day of Thanksgiving and Intercession throughout Britain and all other countries in the British Empire. The service was held to seek Divine intercession and aid for those on active military service in World War One and for the families of these men and women. This programme is of interest as the 1915 service would have been held in Methodist Churches throughout Victoria and Tasmania and this would have included the Warrnambool Methodist Church. This book was published in 2017 to mark the centenary of the Warrnambool sub branch of the Returned Services League of Australia. It was produced by Avis Quarrell herself a world war 2 servicewoman and well known in the Warrnambool district for her photography, historical writing and involvement with Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. The Warrnambool R.S.L. was established in 1917 and the War Memorial was erected in 1926. The Warrnambool R.S.L. is one of the oldest in Australia and this book records its history at the time of its centenary.This is a soft cover book of 100 pages . This is a badge from Warrnambool Technical College in the 1930s. Warrnambool Technical School was established in Timor Street in 1913. The senior section was later called Warrnambool Technical College and then Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education. The latter institute moved to Sherwood Park, Warrnambool and became the present-day Warrnambool campus of Deakin University. Warrnambool Technical School moved to Caramut Road, Warrnambool and is today known as Brauer College. The badge came from Mirth Marfell, the daughter of Henry and Helena Marfell. She was born in Warrnambool in 1919. Her grandfather, John Marfell, a Warrnambool hay and corn dealer and miller connected to the Warrnambool Co-operative Milling Company, was prominent in community and civic affairs in the town. Mirth Marfell completed her nursing training at the Warrnambool Base Hospital and served in the Australian Army Nursing Service in World War Two for five years. She then became the first Australian nursing organizer for the Victorian Royal College of Nursing. This letter has been written from France in 1917 by Private Edwin Johnson Carter to his friend Mrs Maggie Craig. It gives details of events in his life at the time – in the trenches in World War One. Private Edwin Johnson was a farmer from Nullawarre who enlisted in 1916 and served in France. He was drowned when the mail boat R.M.S. Leinster was torpedoed by a German submarine in the Irish Sea in October 1918. Private Johnson was returning from a visit to Ireland while on leave. This is an original letter from World War One It was written by a soldier from Nullawarre and has a particular poignancy as he writes: “My work brings me in contact with all that hurts in war. I am somewhat calm to it now but if I am spared to return I fear it shall be my nightmare.” He did not return but we have this letter to remind us of the horrors men such as Private Carter endured. This is an envelope containing a letter of two pages sent by a soldier on active service in France in World War One. Both the envelope and the letter are buff-coloured. The envelope has an image of an Australian Military Forces Y.M.C.A. logo, a Post Office stamp and a Censor stamp. The address is handwritten in pencil. This booklet was issued to householders in Australia giving information on meat rationing during World War Two. Meat was rationed because much of the meat processed in Australia was sent overseas to Britain and to soldiers in war areas. The booklet includes hints on how to make the most of the meat ration. Meat and other key foods such as tea, sugar and butter were rationed during World War Two. Each person in Australia was allowed two meat coupons a week and, depending on the type of meat, this equated to one pound to two pounds of meat per coupon. Products such as sausages, brains, tripe, poultry, rabbits, bacon and ham were not rationed (but few people could afford poultry). This cup was awarded at a sports day held in 1937 by the Second Cavalry Division of the Victorian Light Horse regiments (The 4th/19th Light Horse Regiment was active in the Warrnambool region at that time). The Victorian Light Horse had both mounted infantry and cavalry units and was the successor in the early 1900s to the Victorian Mounted Rifles founded by Colonel Tom Price in 1886. Eight mounted contingents from Australia served in the Boer War and the Australian Light Horse served with distinction in World War One. The Australian Light Horse, as official military units, ceased to exist in the 1940s. It is not known to whom this cup was awarded in 1937. This cup is of considerable interest as a memento of the activities of the Victorian Light Horse regiments in the 1930s, possibly in the Warrnambool district.This is a silver-plated cup on a circular Bakelite stand. This frame contains two as yet unidentified soldiers from two of Australia’s earliest overseas conflicts. The WW1 soldier has the rank of Captain and the Boer War soldier has the three stripes of Sergeant. It is possible that he belongs to the Coronation Contingent of Edward V11 in 1902.These soldiers were selected form all over Australia with 42 coming from Victoria. The Australian War Memorial cites a number of approximately 16000 soldiers who fought in the Boer War from 1899-1902. Of that number 282 died in action or as a result of wounds while around 320 died as a result of disease and accidents. Six received the Victoria Cross as well as other awards for bravery. The First World War had more drastic consequences for Australia. From a population of less than 5 million, 416809 men enlisted of whom over 60,000 were killed with 156000 wounded gassed or taken prisoner. Australian fought from 1914-1918 from Egypt, Turkey, and the Western Front in Europe. These photographs are representative of many photos which are kept in remembrance of Australian soldiers who fought in wars particularly the two world wars. The Boer war photo is a rarer one.This bi- fold photo frame is rectangular in shape with a rounded section at each top. It is leather in composition and has the Rising Sun insignia in each arch which appears to be metal. There are glass covering two photographs one of a Boer War soldier and the other of WW1. It is hinged in the middle with a double layer of leather which is broken .The Boer war photograph has a coloured flag and medal ribbons. The two Rising Sun badges have Australian Commonwealth Military Forces. The frame itself has J C Vickery Regent St W stamped on the back in gold with a crown above it. These two trays appear to have been made as souvenirs, perhaps to commemorate the end of World War One, as the halfpennies date from 1914 to 1918. A steel helmet, popularly called a tin hat, is used as protective headwear by military personnel and civil workers in times of emergency and disasters. Steel helmets were first used in World War One, with the Allies troops using a design produced in London by John Brodie in 1915. This helmet was constructed in one piece pressed from a single thick sheet of steel and variants of this design have been used by military personnel ever since. It is not clear whether this particular item comes from World War One or World War Two. This steel helmet is retained as a good example of the protective headwear worn by Australian military personnel in World Wars One or Two.The crown of his helmet or tin hat is of an oval shape and it has a short flattened brim. Magneto wall telephones such as this one were commonly in use in Australia around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The wall telephone, powered by dry cells, was an invention of the late 1870s. In the first half of the 20th century many old wall telephones were restored and put back in use by the Australian P.M.G. when there was a shortage of telephones in the 1930s Depression and during World War Two. This item, a reminder of the days of early technology, has no known local provenance but is retained for display and research purposes.This telephone piece is contained within a brown wooden box with a back board that has curved edges and extends over the edges of the box. On the back there are three metal screws for attaching the box to a wall or door. The front section of the box has curved edges with an inset panel around the edges. There is a metal turning handle on one side of the box and on the other side there is a metal clip holding a hearing piece attached to the box by a cord. On the front of the box is a speaking piece attached to the box by a metal piece. Attached to the front of the box are two semi-circular ringing pieces now situated some centimetres out from the box. These spats appear to be part of an army uniform and may have been worn by a member of an Australian Lighthorse unit. The Victorian Mounted Rifles was established in 1885 by Colonel Tom Price who lived in his retirement years in Warrnambool. Many members of the G Company Mounted Rifles from Warrnambool and district enlisted in World War One and served with distinction in the Victorian Lighthorse units which evolved from the Mounted Rifles units. These spats are retained as they are possibly part of the uniform of an Australian Lighthorse soldier early in the 20th century and may have local provenance.These are two spats or leggings made of stiffened brown leather shaped to fit the lower calf of the leg. These three souvenir handkerchiefs were brought back to Australia after World War Two by James Godfrey. Flight Lieutenant James John Godfrey enlisted in World War Two in the Australian Air Force from Bessiebelle in western Victoria. He was attached to the British 8th Army under General Montgomery in North Africa and then took part in the landing in Sicily and the subsequent campaign through Italy. Before returning to Australia he travelled to Israel and Austria. These handkerchiefs are retained, firstly as examples of souvenirs brought back to Australia from returning military personnel after World War Two and secondly as souvenirs belonging to James Godfrey who had connections with the Warrnambool district. .1 This is a small pink silk handkerchief with a fluted edge and with some embroidery in one corner with flowers and wording in green, yellow and orange. .2 This is a small aqua-coloured silk handkerchief with a stitched edge and some stitched wording in one corner. This exercise book contains letters, mostly aerogrammes, sent by people in England during the years 1947 to 1950. They are letters of thanks for the food parcels sent to these people by the staff of George Swinton and Sons of Timor Street Warrnambool. The letters give details of the contents of the parcels, the situation with the families receiving the parcels and the effects of the food rationing and shortages in England immediately after World War Two. The name ‘H.C.Thomson’ on the front of the book refers to Helen Thomson, a staff member of George Swinton & Sons in charge of the food parcel distribution. William and Ann Swinton came to the Warrnambool area in 1854 and William opened a groceries, hardware, china and glassware store in Timor Street in 1865. After William Swinton’s death his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split with Swintons Pty Ltd selling seeds, produce and hardware and George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street, making it one of the oldest family businesses in Australia. This exercise book containing letters sent from England in response to the receipt of food parcels from the staff of George Swinton & Sons of Warrnambool is of considerable significance. The letters form a splendid social history of the situation in England after World War Two, especially for the elderly and the unemployed. They also are a reminder of the charity work undertaken by the staff of George Swinton & Sons 70 years ago. This was a prominent family business in Warrnambool (and continues in another form to this day). This is an exercise book with brown binding and a blue front cover with an image of St George, blue printing and a handwritten name and some other handwritten material which is not decipherable. The back cover has blue printing. Pasted on to the pages are handwritten letters and cards, mostly four to a page. Most of the letters are aerogrammes and some have stamps. These badges were produced about 1918 or 1919 to gain finds to assist Australian soldiers discharged from the armed forces after serving in World War One. One source suggests that the badges were sold only in South Australia and raised £500,000 but, as these badges are part of the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society in Victoria it is likely that they were sold throughout Australia. The sale of badges such as these was a common way of raising funds for charitable causes, especially during World War One and also during the first half of the 20th century. These badges are retained as examples of the type of badges sold during World War One. This badge has been produced and sold to raise funds to assist Australian soldiers returning from active service in World War One. At the end of the war the Wannon and Corangamite Territorial Repatriation Scheme was set up to assist returning soldiers to adapt to civilian life. It is presumed that similar schemes were established in other electorates in Australia. Wannon is the name of a Federal electorate in the south west of Victoria and includes Warrnambool and the name on the badge may be an abbreviation of the fuller name mentioned above or an offshoot of the above organization. The scheme included assistance to soldiers with loans to set up businesses and build homes. This badge is retained as an example of a local effort to assist Australian soldiers returning from active service in World War One.
