This item was donated to Wodonga Historical Society by the artist, Betty L. Barberis. Betty Barberis nee Barton was one of 12 children born to Roderick Barton and Myrtle Ann Hore of Gundowring in the Kiewa Valley. She was born in 1927 and attended Upper Gundowring Primary School. Betty was encouraged to enter a project for the "Young Farmers" by illustrating a book. She won first prize for Victoria and the book was exhibited at the Royal Melbourne Show. This resulted in Betty attaining a Manual Art Teacher's Studentship which she completed at Wangaratta Technical School. Here she learned many new skills ranging from garment design to ceramics. She also attended Melbourne Teachers College. Betty created many decorative banners, the first being for the Australian section of the World Scout Jamboree in 1948. Over her long career she was to create many other banners and commissioned work including these badges for the Australian Antarctic Research Expedition in 1982. Betty’s great body of work included landscapes, millinery, ceramics, and a bronze sculpture of her husband Vern Barberis who was a fellow schoolteacher and represented Australia as a weightlifter, winning a bronze medal at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. She also illustrated several books and had exhibitions in many galleries including in Albury. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. A depiction of the MS Nella Dan an active primary vessel built in 1961 by the Aarlborg Shipyard PTY Ltd, and regularly chartered by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) in the 20th C. The ship ran aground in December 1987 and unable to be salvaged, had to be scuttled in deep water off Macquarie Island. See link above, this record. The ship was named after Nel Law wife of the Director of the Antarctic Division, DR Phil Law. "Ib Odfeldt (b. 1944) is a self-taught painter and sculptor spending many years inspired by and interest in ships and marine art whilst working as an engineer in the Danish Merchant Navy. His paintings demonstrate a keen eye for technical accuracy and skill. The balance and setting of his works have attracted interest in many commissions by lovers of marine and shipping works. In 2002 Ib was awarded the Southern Ocean Maritime Art Prize and this acquisition of the Nella Dan is presented in the foyer of the Tasmanian Maritime Museum in Hobart." According to the artist, the painting was part of an exhibition he held at "Melbourne maritime museum " (Polly Woodside) to celebrate ANARE (ARTIC SHOW). He donated two paintings of the Nella Dan. The envelope was produced in 1979 to commemorate the 125 Anniversary of Railways in Australia. This cream envelope has an imprinted stamp on the upper right and a large red imprinted seal on the left. Within in the seal are the words 'Melbourne & Hobsons Bay' & an imprint of a 1854 stream train. The Melbourne & Hobson's Bay Railway company built and operated the first railway line from Flinders Street to Sandridge (now Port Melbourne). The Royal Society of Victoria was formed in 1859 from a merger between The Philosophical Society of Victoria and The Victorian Institute for the Advancement of Science, both founded in 1854. The first president of the Royal Society was Baron Sir Ferdinand von Mueller, then Government botanist. In 1860 the R.S.V. organised the Burke and Wills expedition. The Society has played an important role in the life of Melbourne and Victoria including establishing the Melbourne Museum and National Parks, convening the first Australian Antarctic Exploration Committee in 1885, organising the Burke and Wills expedition and establishing the Victorian Institute of Marine Sciences in 1978. Established in 1950, the Department of Supply headquarters transferred to Canberra in January 1968 and was dissolved in 1974. It was superseded by the Department of Manufacturing Industry and Department of the Special Minister of State. The Department was a Commonwealth Public Service department, staffed by officials who were responsible to the Minister for Supply. The department's main function was to support Australia's Navy, Army and Air Force in defence production, research and development, purchas­ing, transport and storage. The Department was also the Commonwealth Disposals Authority. Finally, the Department was responsible for the Australian Antarctic program. Bendigo was the site of an Ordnance Factory and manufactured and reconditioned naval guns and mountings, turbine gears for large ships, general heavy engineering work, large fabricated structure and missile handling equipment. The factory was managed in 1970 by R.I.M Moss. Diana Patterson was born in Tasmania and originally pursued a career as a physical education teacher. After making a major career change, she applied to join the Australian Antarctic Division. She applied four times before she was accepted. Diana first travelled to the Antarctic in October 1987. By this time only ten Australian women had spent a winter there. She first worked at Casey Station, before becoming leader at Mawson Station therein becoming the first female leader of an Antarctic base of any nation. After retiring Diana guided tourist expeditions to the Antarctic for many years, as well as continuing work in research and conservation. In 2012 she published her story “The Ice Beneath My Feet: My Year In Antarctica”. Diana Patterson was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for "service to conservation and the environment”. As well as these outstanding career achievements, Diana has been a Board Member of both the Mt. Buller Alpine Resort Management Board, including a period as Chairman, and also the Falls Creek Resort Management Board. This lapel pin originates from the Birkebeiner Lodge in Norway. The cross country ski race which originated there in 1932 was the inspiration for the annual Kangaroo Hoppet Race held in Falls Creek, Victoria. The Kangaroo Hoppet is Australia's premier long distance cross country ski race, and a member of the prestigious Worldloppet series of international cross country ski events. The first race at Falls Creek was held in 1979 under the name of “Australian Birkebeiner”. The course started and finished at the alpine ski village of Falls Creek, and took participants out into the wilderness area of the Bogong High Plains. Later, 42km became the main distance and after a few name changes, the name of Kangaroo Hoppet was adopted in 1990. Dick Richards has been honoured through the naming of a Ballarat School of Mines prize - The R.W. Richards Medal. This medal later became a University of Ballarat prize. It has been awarded annually since 1959 to the Bachelor of Applied Science graduate considered to have achieved the most outstanding academic performance of their course. The award was was introduced to commemorate the long years of service to tertiary education in Ballarat by Mr Richards. Dick Richards joined the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) in 1914, and soon afterwards was granted leave to join an expedition to Antarctica. In 1915 he sailed from Australia with the Antarctic Exploration Expedition, led by Sir Ernest Shackleton. Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs which began publication in 1949. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. Dick Richards joined the Ballarat School of Mines in 1914, and soon afterwards was granted leave to join an expedition to Antartica. In 1915 he sailed from Australia with the Antarctic Exploration Expedition, led by Sir Ernest Shackleton. Prime Minister Bob Hawke wrote in 1984 'Your incredible journey of almost 2000 miles across the Antarctic Wastelands - involving some 9 months in the field with makeshift equipment - and you're adherence to duty in the face of enormous difficulty, suffering from scurvy, and the death of comrades, will; be an inspiration to your countrymen of the future as it is to us today." After returning to Australia Dick Richards resumed his work at SMB as Lecturer in Physics and Mathematics, and developed many pieces of experimental equipment. During World War Two he acted as a scientific adviser in the production of optical apparatus in Australia. This spoon rest is a souvenir item for tourists to purchase. It is a souvenir of the presence of Southern Right whales at Logans Beach, a few kilometres from Warrnambool’s Central Business District. Each year Southern Right whales have been migrating from sub-Antarctic waters to the east coast of Australia during the winter months. Some whales have been coming each year from approximately May to October (since the 1980s) to have their calves at Logans Beach near Warrnambool. This area is now known as Warrnambool’s Southern Right Nursery. The whales calve about every three years and stay in the local waters along with other whales for about three months and over the past thirty years or so over 100 calves have been born at Logans Beach. The whales are now a winter tourist attraction (if an unpredictable one) as they can be viewed from a raised purpose-built platform area and they are often very close to the shore.This spoon rest is of interest as it is a souvenir of the Southern Right Whale Nursery at Logans Beach, Warrnambool and it has a practical use in the kitchen. It indicates the popularity of whale-viewing at Logans Beach and the importance of the presence of the whales, both scientifically and economically as the annual whale migration to our waters is now a vital aspect of tourism in Warrnambool.
