Information page detailing the history of Sages Cottage from building in 1853/56 as a homestead, to being purchased in 1976 by the Victoria Conservation Trust. John Edward Sage built the cottage as the homestead for his farm "Eurutta" in 1856. John lived in the cottage with his wife and children up until his death in 1908 with his wife, Maria Sage (nee Baxter) continuing to live there until her death in 1927. Their youngest son, Thomas Holden Sage, and three daughters, Fanny Martha, Annie Agususta and Ellen Amynta continued to live there until their deaths. Thomas died in 1960 but gifted the remaining block of land with the cottage to his [niece?] Annie Moriah Sage a year before his death. Annie was Matron of the Australian Military Forces (AMF) in WW2. [Annie was born in 1895 as the fifth child to Edward Arthur and Mary Anne Sage. She trained in nursing, obtaining her nursing certificate in 1926. 1940 saw Annie join the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS), Australian Imperial Force (AIF). During WWII Annie served as matron for the 2nd/2nd Australian General Hospital in the Middle East. She was made matron-in-chief, AIF (Middle East) in 1940, and was appointed a member of the Red Cross in 1942. Returning to Australia in 1942, she was elevated to deputy matron-in-chief, AMF in February 1943, and sub-sequentially promoted to colonel in March. Her duties included organising the AANS for duty in the South-West Pacific Area and oversaw the training scheme for the Australian Army Medical Women's Service (AAMWS). In September 1945 Annie flew to Sumatra to assist with the repatriation of the twenty four Australian nurses imprisoned by the Japanese. For her war service she was awarded the Florence Nightingale medal (1947) by the International Red Cross. The badge was issued by the Victorian branch (indicated by the 'V' on the reverse) of the Australian Legion of Ex-Servicemen and Women and is referred to as The Badge of Unity or Tri-Services badge, uniting the armed services of Australia; the Army (rising sun), the Navy (anchor) and the Air Force (pair of wings). The number '57' on the crown represents the year of paid membership; 1957. The badge belonged to Dr W R Angus, who served in the Australian Army as a military doctor during WWII. It was made in Melbourne by Stokes in 1957, around 100 years after the firm was established by Thomas Stokes in Mincing Lane, Melbourne. The firm was operating from Caledonian Lane/Post Office Place in the 1950s. The badge is one of a set of badges collected by Dr W R Angus from the organisations in which he was involved. They are now part of Flagstaff Hill’s comprehensive W.R. Angus Collection, donated by the family of Dr W R Angus, surgeon and oculist. Australian Legion of Ex-Servicemen and Women was formed in 1944 to "entourage fellowship and assist those who have served". The organisation is open to members from Australia, British Commonwealth and Allied ex-service personnel. The W.R. Angus Collection: - The W.R. Angus Collection includes historical medical equipment, surgical instruments and material once belonging to Dr Edward Ryan and Dr Thomas Francis Ryan, (both of Nhill, Victoria) as well as Dr Angus’ own belongings. The Collection’s history spans the medical practices of the two Doctors Ryan, from 1885-1926 plus that of Dr Angus, up until 1969. It includes historical medical and surgical equipment and instruments from the doctors Edward and Thomas Ryan of Nhill, Victoria. Dr Angus married Gladys in 1927 at Ballarat, the nearest big city to Nhill where he began as a Medical Assistant. He was also Acting House surgeon at the Nhill hospital where their two daughters were born. During World War II He served as a Military Doctor in the Australian Defence Force. Dr Angus and his family moved to Warrnambool in 1939, where Dr Angus operated his own medical practice. He later added the responsibility of part-time Port Medical Officer and was the last person appointed to that position. Both Dr Angus and his wife were very involved in the local community, including the planning stages of the new Flagstaff Hill and the layout of the gardens there. Dr Angus passed away in March 1970.This Badge of Unity, or Tri-Service badge, is significant for connecting Doctor Angus with organisations that support men and women who performed military service for Australia. The badge was for membership with the organisation, which supports ex-servicemen and women of the three military forces; Army, Navy and Air Force. The W.R. Angus Collection is significant for still being located at the site it is connected with, Doctor Angus being the last Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool. Initially its purpose was to try and find ways of overcoming the inadequacy of army medical services so as to alleviate the suffering of those wounded in armed conflict. Over time it has extended its work to include many forms of humanitarian aid in times of peace and war. The Australian Red Cross Society (ARCS) was formed just after the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, originally as a branch of the British Red Cross. It is especially remembered in the provision of “comforts” for soldiers overseas. Enormous sums of money were raised, and thousands of women volunteers contributed their time by making vast quantities of clothing: socks, vests, mittens, mufflers, pyjamas and a variety of linen. Items were sent to headquarters located in the state capitals, often using government houses as depots, where, after being sorted and packed by yet more volunteers, they were sent to Britain or the front. The effect of this work for the recipients was to bring comfort in its truest sense, for a seemingly trivial gift of a bar of chocolate of a pair of dry socks could bring the most profound relief for a soldier on the Western Front. From the date of its inception until the armistice the ARCS dispatched 395,695 food parcels and 36,339 clothing parcels Between 1914 and 1918 more than £3,500,00 was collected and spent on Red Cross services to the Australian Forces and Empire Forces. In the 2000s Legacy released a range of Legacy Bears to expand the merchandise available for sale during Legacy Week and at other fundraising opportunities during the year. This bear is in an Australian WW1 nurse with a red cape and white headpiece. The Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) was formed in 1903 as part of the Australian Army Medical Corps. More than 3,000 civilian nurses volunteered to serve during WWI. While their stories are rarely told eight of these inspirational women received the Military Medal for bravery. Sometimes special editions of the bears were produced. This Minnitt machine was owned by Dr Mary Clementina DeGaris. Dr DeGaris qualified from medicine, MB BS, at the University of Melbourne in 1905. She continued her studies, becoming only the second woman in Victoria to qualify MD, in 1907. With the outbreak of war, DeGaris attempted to enlist as a doctor with the Australian Army but was refused. Undeterred she travelled to England, where she joined the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service, a medical group made up entirely of women. After the war, she returned to Australia and set up practice as an obstetrician in Geelong, Victoria. Subsequently, the Geelong Hospital named a wing after her, "DeGaris House", which is now part of Geelong Private Hospital. DeGaris was awarded the St Saba medal, 3rd class, for her work during WWI. Robert James Minnitt introduced the concept of self-administered analgesia, using an apparatus designed and built in conjunction with London scientific instrument-maker, Charles King. The Minnitt apparatus met with considerable success and led to further modifications, including the introduction of the Queen Charlotte gas-air analgesia apparatus in 1936.Brown leather suitcase with brass locks and leather handle. Dr Elizabeth “Betty” Nankivell (1907-2003), later Mrs Forward, graduated in 1937 from Melbourne University with a degree in medicine. She worked at Queen Victoria and Royal Adelaide Hospitals. During WWII, she practised medicine in Morwell, and in 1945 joined the Royal Australian Army Medical Corp (R.A.A.M.C.). Betty lived and worked in many South East Asian countries, including 10 years of private practise in Kuala Lumpur, before retiring in 1970 to live in Melbourne. Research by project volunteer, Fiona Collyer: Dr Elizabeth “Betty” Nankivell, Mrs Forward Betty Nankivell (1907 – 2003) was a champion Victorian golfer and medical doctor. She competed in the Australian Women’s Golf Championship at Royal Melbourne in 1935 against the visiting British Team. She eliminated 18 year old British champion Pam Barton, but was defeated by the eventual winner of the tournament, Mrs J B Walker in the semi finals. In 1938, Betty won the SA Golf Championships at Kooyonga SA. Betty graduated from Melbourne University with a degree in medicine in 1937 and worked at Queen Victoria Hospital and at Royal Adelaide Hospital as R.M.O. (Resident Medical Officer). During the war years, Betty practised medicine in Morwell, Victoria, and in 1945 joined the R.A.A.M.C. (Royal Australian Army Medical Corp) for the Malaya Medical Service. In 1946, she married Alan Forward OBE, a Colonel in the British Army and later the Commissioner of Road Transport in Malaya, and lived and worked in many S E Asian countries including 10 years in private practice in Kuala Lumpur. Betty continued to play golf throughout her life, retiring in 1970, and died in Melbourne in 2003. Reginald George Worcester (1903-1972) was a highly regarded obstetrics and gynaecology specialist. Between 1930 and 1933, Worcester was the Medical Superintendent at the Royal Women's Hospital. He obtained his MRCOG in England in 1935, and on his return to Australia was appointed as a university tutor in obstetrics and gynaecology. In 1939, he was appointed as the honorary gynaecologist to outpatients at the Royal Women's Hospital. Worcester served with the AIF during World War II as C.O. of the 17th Field Ambulance in Darwin and as A.D.M.S., Northern Territory Force, and the 2nd/9th Australian Army Corps from 1942 to 1943. His major war service, however, was undertaken in Borneo and Moratai, commanding the 2nd/1st Australian C.C.S. and the 2nd/9th Australian General Hospital. Worcester acquitted himself admirably during the war, with company commander Hubert Smith praising his contribution in no uncertain terms: " His [Worcester's] success as C.O. of a Field Ambulance resulted from a complete understanding of what the unit should be able to do in the transportation of casualties in the field, as well as of the usual medial functions. He organized both with efficiency and at all times difficult decisions were made with humility and good humour. The personal qualities which made him such a calm and considerate consultant never left him, even in the most dangerous and trying circumstances of war." Worcester's time in the army greatly affected his health, but despite this he was able to build a strong and reputable practice upon his return to Australia. As outlined by Arthur Hill, Worcester " was appointed in turn to the following important posts: Honorary Outpatient Obstetrician and Inpatient Gynaecologist to the Women’s Hospital (1946-1948); Honorary Gynaecologist to Prince Henry’s Hospital (1946-1963); Guest Examiner in London for the R.C.O.G. (1953); Examiner in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (1957-1964); Visiting Gynaecologist to the Repatriation General Hospital, Heidelberg 1963- 1967); and first Victorian Members’ representative (1947-1950) and later Fellows’ Representative (1953-1960) on the Australian (Regional) Council of the R.C.O.G. To these posts he brought the benefits of clear thinking and critical awareness. In 1949 he was elected F.R.C.O.G." In early 1967, Worcester suffered a hemiplegia which left him with an impaired gait and paralysed his right hand. Although unable to do major surgery, he returned to part-time practice by September 1967. His ill-health persisted though, and he was retired from practice in 1970. There are two locks on the top of the case, and a metal clasp on either side to fasten the bag closed. The case is embossed with the text 'R.G. WORCESTER' on top, in a position between the two locks and below the handle at bottom centre. The inside of the case is lined with a canvas bag that is buttoned to the case with press studs.
