Eternal Flame was created by Ballarat sculptor Peter Blizzard as a marker of the end of WWII in the Pacific. Engraved into the bluestone shaped tile across the base of the statue is details about conflict areas where Australian Troops were active. The metal structure mimics a moving flame with it's polished golden hue, a feature included in many war memorials around the world. Peter Blizzard also designed the Prisoner of War Memorial in the South Gardens, Ballarat Botanic Gardens. Point to Sky is one of Akio Makigawa’s final works, the commission was completed posthumously. It is the only public artwork by the celebrated Australian-Japanese sculptor of this scale located in regional Victoria. You will see two stainless steel forms, a smaller more rectangle form and the towering geometric form, with seed pod shapes at the peak. These forms represent the house, the artist is expressing that home is a shelter and also a place for gathering. The house form grows into a tower to symbolise the achievements of mankind and the action taken to protect the rights of the community during the Eureka Stockade. The top seed pod is gold, referencing Ballarat as the centre of the gold rush in Victoria, as well as representing the sun as the source of life. The paving of the forecourt was designed in bluestone, typical of the work of Makigawa. Stainless steel panelling and shaping on armature. “The Cat has been an important and ongoing subject in my work for a number of years. As the Community Centre is surrounded by three schools, my aim was to make a sculpture that would engage and speak to one of the main users of the building, the children. My humorous and oversized interpretation of the cat draws inspiration from ancient Egyptian art as well as childhood and adult memories of many amusing encounters with these thought provoking creatures”. The artwork reinforced that the Centre is a meeting place with the two figures apparently waiting, the mother seated on an ornate seat and the daughter standing behind her. The Oopsee Daisee series of work is basically a series of self portraits. They began out of a necessity to recover from a nasty fall. The first sculpture of the series was like art therapy, a means to help overcome the bad memories, and anxieties. And it helped. Penelope Davis was born and lives in Melbourne. Davis is primarily known as a post-photographic artist creating photographs without a camera. Using complicated sculptural techniques, Davis makes silicone moulds then resin casts of the now absent objects. Finally light is passed through the casts to expose photographic paper that is developed and printed. The result is an indexical trace of an object many steps removed from its origin. In doing so, the works record not only an image but a process - a chain of transformations and inversions - akin to the processes of photography itself but one that recasts photography in a new light. More recently Davis has been creating jellyfish forms from a collage of components in a similar way. Taking the detritus of contemporary technologies and combining these with organic source material such as leaves and seaweed, Davis makes casts in silicone, then uses these casts themselves as forms. The artist hand sews these ‘skins’ together to create delicate hybrid forms that resemble jellyfish. In recognition of its fallen soldiers and Churchill's 50th birthday a service memorial was erected on a concrete plinth at the Churchill town plaza and used for the first time to mark the ANZAC centenary on Anzac Day 2015. Churchill never had a war memorial and received a grant from the Department of Veterans' Affairs six years ago to commission a sculpture with Latrobe City Council's support. It was decided the sculpture needed to recognise more than just the war effort, but service and volunteerism, considering Churchill was only founded in 1965. Traditional memorials usually commemorate Armed Services personnel, but CDCA was of the opinion that a more inclusive view which included Emergency Services personnel, such as CFA, SES and Police, could be incorporated into the Churchill Memorial. Boolarra artist, Paul Jesse, who is accomplished in Ferro-Cement sculpture techniques, was commissioned to create a memorial that would cause people to reflect on the meaning of ‘service’ and ‘sacrifice’. The following is a description of the Churchill Service Memorial Sculpture written by the sculptor, Paul Jesse. “My sculpture is different from most War Memorial sculptures because it uses as its basis the reasons why people go into service or to war. One side of the sculpture is colourful and optimistic; its theme is home, family, community and the future. These themes are crafted by flow lines which are connected to the other side of the sculpture through the round hole and the Crosspiece. These lines can be seen as a multi-layered connection between the sides. On the “dark” side of the sculpture, the lines begin with a spiral of coloured mosaics. This spiral is representative of our service people. Its beginning can be seen on one level as their soul. The spiralling mosaics of them flow to the other side of the sculpture where they create the landscape and figures. These lines can also be seen as a range of connectors between the two sides, representing a flow of thoughts, love, fear, concern and dreams. They also represent physical communication such as letters and phone calls.” This ‘Service Memorial’ is located in the Churchill Plaza (adjacent to the Town Hall), along with four flagpoles, seating and garden beds. The Churchill Service Memorial has deliberately been designed as a thought-provoking public art work. It will complement the Art and Culture Pathway which links Switchback Gallery at the Federation University Campus to the Town Centre. We hope Churchill citizens will pause to view the Memorial, ponder its meaning, reflect on the service of others and commemorate the fallen. Covered Person, combines my ambition to create objects possessing an enigmatic and engaging physical presence with an interest in histories of repetitive labour and the compulsive patterning found in various art and design traditions. Inge KING (26 November 1915 – 23 April 2016) Born Berlin, Germany Arrived Australia 1951 Inge King trained as a wood carver and studied at the Berlin Academy (1937-1939), Royal Academy London (1940), and the Glascow School of Art (1941-1843) . She moved to London in 1847 and began carving organic abstract forms in wood and stone. In 1949-50 she went on a study tour to the United States of America where she was inspired to work in metal . Inge King arrived in Australia in 1951 and she completed several large scale public works. Between 1861 and 1875 Inge King lectured at the Institute of Early Childhood Development, Kew. From 1976 to 1987 she lectured in Sculpture at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. She was a founding member of the Ceminal Centre Five group, and she actively lobbied architects, governments and State galleries to include modernist sculptures in their plans and displays. In 1991 Inge King joined the first National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Public Art Committee, advising on public art at risk and worthy of Trust classification. The Australian Women's Art Register describes Inge King as having been at the forefront of developing a non figurative vocabulary in Australian Sculpture. This sculpture by Inge King was purchased in 1967 with funds raised by staff and students of Ballarat Teachers' College, a predecessor institution of Federation University Australia. During this era a collection was made which resulted in an annual purchase or commission of an artwork of note.
