The design of the uniform with its silver, diamond shaped buttons with the Scottish thistle symbol on them, indicate that the uniform was made for a Scottish Pipe Band member. There may be a connection with the local Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums Inc, which began as the Warrnambool Pip Band in 1906, formed with the purpose of popularising Scottish music. Those with uniforms wore the Gordon tartan. In 1946 the uniforms were changed, with the Cameron or Errcht tartan chosen for the uniform. The Band now wears the Anderson tartan. The maker, David Lack Pty Ltd, advertised as a uniform specialist. In 1941 the business was located at 35-37 Little Latrobe Street, Melbourne. In the same year the firm won a contract with the Commonwealth Government Department of Supply, providing blue trousers for the Department of Air. In 1946 a branch of the firm operated in Myrtleford, Victoria. The Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, branch provided new uniforms in 1948 for the Leeton District Band. In the 1950s and 1960s David Lack manufactured blazers for the Olympic Teams as well as for bowls teams and schools. The Broken Hills Cameron Pipe Band' was gifted with uniforms that were also made by David Lack. It was a "... a Cameron of Lochlel red kilt and plaid, with black doublets and cross belts, and silver trimmings.” [Barrier Miner, Broken Hiss, 15-03-1954].The pipe band uniform jacket's design is associated with traditional Scottish pipe bands that originated in the United Kingdom and continue to this day in Australia and even locally in Warrnambool since 1908. The maker, David Lack Pty Ltd, is renowned as the maker of good quality uniforms who has supplied many government contracts for clothing and uniforms since the early 1940s. This utility truck was one of two used by the Albury Gas Co, from the Gas Works in Kiewa Street, Albury to service the coal gas supply system in Albury during the war years from 1939-1945. The gas bags were installed as petrol was in short supply. One of the trucks was driven by John (Jack) Stanley Cruickshank, also known as Wodonga's Gas Man. Jack became foreman for the Wodonga Branch of the Albury Gas Co. An 80 millimetre galvanised steel pipeline was installed from the Albury Gas Co. in Kiewa Street, Albury, to 26 Church Street, Wodonga. A 40 horsepower pump pushed the gas to holding tanks. Sections of the gas pipeline to Wodonga can still be observed under some of the bridges from Albury to Wodonga. Jack also supervised the laying of the gas pipes in the streets of Wodonga, being hand dug by a gang of 15- 20 men. He was Wodonga's first Gas Fitter, both fitting gas appliances and overseeing their maintenance. Jack Cruickshank passed away in 1979 and is buried at the Wodonga Cemetery. This image is significant because it represents the installation of gas supply to Wodonga, Victoria.A black and white photo of a large van with a gas-filled bag on top of it and also a portrait of Jack Cruickshank. Photos are mounted together with text in a wooden frame.jack cruickshank, wodonga gas supply co.

Sally Hearn (1932–2018) was a dedicated button collector and a prominent member of the Victoria Button Collectors Club. Her button collection was featured as a primary display in the 'The Melbourne Story' exhibition at the Melbourne Museum, which opened in mid-2008.The Hearn Collection of locally made and international buttons is historically and aesthetically significant as it illustrates the textile and manufacturing history of button making.8 buttons on blue paper on red card. Dark blue and brown in colour, made of glazed clay. Made by a 'Wally' c. 1930, somewhere around Maribyrnong (Victoria). Original Catalogue Entry: "Margaret’s mother Ella Stone had a boarder named Wally. Wally was an alcoholic and a bit of a ‘no hoper’ but he worked at the Maribyrnong Pipe Works. One day after school Margaret told him to take off his trousers, he couldn’t continue to go around without any buttons and she would sew some on for him. A while later Wally came home with a paper bag for her. In it were these buttons he had made at work for her! – made from the clay and glazes of Melbourne’s sewerage pipes in exchange for some trouser fly buttons!!!"sally hearn, button collections
