Edith (Alice) WATSON (1914–2010) Murtoa | Australia Alice Watson studied at the Ballarat Technical Art School (at the School of Mines, Ballarat) from 1930 until 1933. Watson sat several departmental exams, including drawing and painting plant forms from nature, lettering, Composition of Form and Colour and advanced General Design, as well as dressmaking and embossed leatherwork. General Design examinations required only designs on paper, and not the full execution of an object (which was the case for Applied Design exams). Watson's folio applies many Australian native floral elements to design. Upon graduating, Watson taught at the Murtoa High School, living with her parents until their deaths in 1972 and 1988 when she was 74 years old. Alice Watson died in Ballarat, aged 95, having conserved her beautiful student folio, which was generously gifted to the Federation University permanent Historical Collection by the Watson family. It is possible that this may have been a wedding present or gift to Roy Wines and or his family as his name is scratched on the bottom. Roy was married in 1924 in Warrnambool. Roy Arthur Wines was Born in 1897 in Mailors Flat Victoria Australia and Died in 1980 in Ballarat. Roy lived for a number of years in Warrnambool during his married life.A massed produced item that at the time was cheap to buy with no makers mark or date stamp thousands would have been produced using a mould to make the ceramic case in two half's by pouring liquid clay into the mould and then joining the half's together when cured. This item could have been produced in Holland at any number of pottery factories at this time for export in vast quantities.Ceramic clock; the mechanism is plated steel and set in a ceramic case with glass over the face. The ceramic base colour is white with royal blue ceramic colour to the front and sides only. The blue ceramic has been painted over with lime green house paint on the front and sides. An inscription of a handwritten name is on the case and a hard-to-read model or batch number is on the cast base. Mark REID Mark Reid began working with clay in the early 1980s, working for a time at Kairi Pottery in North Queensland. In 1985, he and his wife Robyn set up the Torvil Pottery at Buninyong, Victoria. In 1991, they relocated to a 10 acre property in nearby Magpie and set up the Ballarat Clayfire Gallery with a working studio, gallery and residence. In 2005, the Clayfire Gallery was located to Daylesford. Reid signs his work with an incised 'Mark Reid' or 'MR'. John GLEESON Living at Campbell's Creek for over 30 years, John Gleeson makes a range of functional stoneware pottery. He fell in loved with pottery during a hobby class in Geelong in 1972. He worked for a year at Canny Ridge Pottery in Harcourt. John Gleeson uses white stoneware and porcelain clay from The Bendigo Pottery, and buff clay from Bennetts Pottery in Adelaide. In 1870 clay deposits were discovered in the Lithgow Valley in the vicinity of the Lithgow Valley Colliery. Tim HOLMES Born Wales Tim Holmes first became interested in pottery on a visit to New Zealand in 1969. After returning home he studied at the local art school, then enrolled at the Harrow School of Art in 1973. While there, he was introduced to Gwyn Hanssen Pigott's work, and returned to Australia to help her set up a pottery in Tasmania. He established his own Garden Island Creek Pottery in 1977, and started making wood-fired pottery, digging and milling his own clay. He used a two- chambered kiln, firing raw- glazed domestic stoneware in the first chamber and earthenware garden pots in the second. In 1988, he moved his pottery to the Potter's Croft at Dunalley on the east coast of Tasmania. He and his wife Tammy now run the Potter's Croft as a bed and breakfast with a craft gallery, and he is still making pottery using a wood-fired kiln. Garden Island Creek Pottery had its own impressed stamp, and work may also be impressed 'TH' or incised 'T. Holmes'. Tim Holmes was a visiting visitor to Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (later Federation University) in 1983. Greg CROWE (1953- ) Born England, arrived Australia 1963 Greg Crowe's intial training was in architecture. In 1980 Greg Crowe established the Hovea Pottery in the hills east of Perth and am constantly firing up new work there 30 years on.In 2008 Greg Crowe undertook a McKnight Residency for Ceramic Artists at the Northern Clay Center, Minnesota, U.S.A., and has demonstrated and exhibited elsewhere in the U.S.A. and Canada, Japan, France, Denmark, Ireland and Singapore. In 1985 he built a wood-fired salt kiln at Hovea with Fergus Stewart, and has specialised in wood-firing and salt-glazing since then, In 1992 he worked with wood firer Sven Bayer in Devon, UK. Stewart SCAMBLER Stewart Scrambler is also a woodfirer, making ceramic forms inspired by the Western Australian landscape from local clays and glazes and a mix of native timbers from his York property. John DERMER (1949- ) Born Melbourne, Victoria John Dermer studied Ceramics at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Hawthorne State College (Diploma of Education), before working in potteries in England. Upon his return to Australia he established "Kirby's Flat Pottery" studio at Yackandandah, Victoria in 1974. John is proudly a product of the Leach/Hamada movement in ceramics. He sees this as a tradition that for him represents the essence of working with clay. The lines are pure and balanced while the forms are honest, proud and passionate. Yars of research and experience in salt glazing were rewarded in 2006 when John Dermerwon the highly prestigious Saltzbrand Keramik International Award in Koblenz, Germany. Another avenue of ceramics for which John is renowned is in the field of terra sigillata. This passion had its foundation back in 1987 when he received a major commission from Romaldo Giurgola and Pamille Berg for the new Parliament House in Canberra. During the completion of these massive pieces for the Prime Minister’s suite and Cabinet entry he had to invent and develop methods for decorating and firing the pots successfully. The completed pieces are still regarded by John as some of his finest works. John Dermer was a visiting lecturer to the Gippsland Centre of Art and Design (GCAD). This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. Her student peers raised funds to buy ceramic works in her memory. MALCOLM BOYD Born Gippsland, Victoria In 1977 Malcolm Boyd graduated with a Diploma of Visual Arts from the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education. Boyd operated the Black Cockatoo Pottery from around 1980-1995, starting in Essendon, then moving to Ascot Vale, Stratford, Bairnsdale and finally Fernbank in Gippsland. His handbuilt stoneware pots and clay sculptures are wood fired at his East Gippsland studio. He often uses ochre coloured dam banks on his property at Fernbank. The local clays are crushed, screened and blended with a white stoneware body to produce a number of shades and textures. All Malcolm Boyd's pot's are hand built using moulding, coiling, slabbing, and modelling techniques, and are high temperature fired (1300C) to allow some of the very ancient oriental glazes to mature. All works spend at least 20 hours in the wood fired kilns. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection which was amassed with funds raised by Jan Feder's student peers at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design in the mid 1980s after Jan Feder passed away. Although many of the works are donated the intention of the collection was to purchase from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught at the Churchill Campus. Douglas ALEXANDER (1945-1981) Born Skipton, Victoria Doug Alexander studied Ceramics at the Ballarat School of Mines. In 1968 he was employed as a thrower and designer at Bendigo Pottery leaving that position to work and travel to New Zealand. He settled at Kerri Kerri, Bay of Islands in New Zealand and operated the Red Barn Pottery. In 1970 Doug Alexander returned to Australia establishing Spring Mount Pottery at Creswick where he used local clays to produce his work. He moved to Tharwa, ACT, in 1976 and established the Cappucumbalong Pottery. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Samuel John CRUMP John Crump obtained a Diploma in Art (Pottery) in 1968 at the Ballarat Technical Art School. He lectured in ceramics at Ballarat Teachers' College (1972-1976) and State College Victoria Ballarat (1976 and 1991), as well as making functional stoneware, decorative and architectural forms and ceramic panels. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Wheel thrown pot with burnished Black Hill ochre slip over a local stoneware body. Robert BARRON (1957- ) Born in Harpenden, England. Robert Barron first worked full-time with clay in 1976, the family pottery at Croydon, Victoria. In 1979, he left Australia on a five-year journey to New Zealand, North America, England, Europe, and South Korea to work with skilled potters in woodfiring. During this time, he visited Michael Cardew at Wenford Bridge Pottery, Cornwall, UK., and was engaged as an apprentice at Cornwall Bridge Pottery, Connecticut, USA. Returning to Australia in 1984, he established Gooseneck Pottery at Kardella, Victoria. With the assistance of a Crafts Board grant Robert Barron built a 1000 cubic ft five-chambered Nabori-Gama style woodfired kiln. This kiln one of the largest wood-fired kilns in Australia. In particular I have been using these methods of construction [slab] to interpret the traditionally spherical form of the teapot as a cubist painter might by squaring it up and transposing curved surfaces into planes and angles. These geometric versions provide flat surfaces for pattern making and light reflection, and the objects become increasingly more decorative than functional. I find enormous pleasure in bending convention to the verge of impracticality. But not so radically that l miss the challenge of producing a form that still incorporates most of the elements of a properly functioning teapot, such as the height of the spout to the pot, the ease of filling, emptying, and handling. Surface decoration plays a vital role in reinforcing the abstraction. Bold areas of black underglaze are applied with distinct boundaries dictated by the form’s angles and planes. In pairs or ad hoc groupings the teapots react with each other and the spaces between to present complex geometric patterns. High firing produces a dense, almost vitrified body and the surface quality I admire without the need for glaze. Inspirational methodologies in art history including the Dance of Death, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Ship of Fools and Woodcut Novels are cornerstones of his artwork. In 1988, during a visit to Australia, while viewing a small porcelain woodfired bowl and teapot by Australian artist Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, Kurt Webb decided to abandon his desire to make functional pottery. He realized that Piggott’s clay work was beyond comparison or emulation and was impossibly inimitable. In 2015, inspired by using impeccably made, functional commercial tea ware, Webb decided to give pottery making a second chance. As a result, Webb’s new functional work acknowledges traditional influences while he pursues individuality through eclectic subject matter, meticulous construction, and decoratively glazed surfaces–all produced within a contemporary context. Mark REID Mark Reid began working in clay in the early 1980. He was working for a time at Kairi Pottery in North Queensland. In 1985, Mark and Robyn Reid established Torvil Pottery at Buninyong, Victoria. In 1991 he relocated to a 10 acre property in nearby Magpie and set up the Ballarat Clayfire Gallery. Gladys REYNELL (04/091881 - 16/11/1956) Born Glenelg, South Australia Gladys Reynell was South Australia's first studio potter and the first Australian artist to apply modernist principles to the crafts. For four years she worked from Ballarat. Osrey Pottery Ballarat operated between 1922 and 1926 by Gladys Reynell and George Osborne. The name of the pottery was an acronym formed from their surnames. Gladys Reynell, her sister Emily and brothers Rupert and Carew supported the war effort during World War One. Rupert Reynell was a neurologist who valued handicrafts in the rehabilitation of shell-shocked soldiers. He influenced Gladys and Margaret Rose (Rose) McPherson (later known as Margaret Preston) to learn pottery at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, London, in 1916. Next year a friend sent Gladys some Kangaroo Island clay which excited her: 'I thought then that it could be the most delightful thing on earth to make pots in Australia from virgin clay'. In 1918 Gladys and Rose began teaching pottery to soldiers at Seale Hayne Neurological Hospital, Devon. In September 1919 Gladys Reynell came home in September due to her father's illness. She established the Reynella Pottery and became responsible for all stages of pottery production. Using a seasoned dump of buff-coloured clay from a well at nearby McLaren Vale Gladys Reynell built and fired her own kiln; threw simple, robust forms based on early European folk pottery; and decorated them with designs inspired by both Aboriginal art—one of the earliest to use this as a source. Gladys Reynell decorated her earthenware pottery with the characteristic rich 'Reynella blue' slip. On 14 August 1922 at St Mary's Church, Edwardstown, Gladys married George Samuel Osborne, an ex-serviceman and gardener at Reynella; they had no children. Between 1922 and 1926 they set up Osrey Pottery In Ballarat. Gladys produced pottery for sale at fairs with George as her assistant. She would throw her pots in the street, causing a sensation. In 1926 George contracted lead poisoning from lead in the glazes. They moved to rural Curdievale where Gladys resumed painting and making woodcuts. From 1939 Gladys and George lived in Melbourne. In World War II she worked in the army pay corps, in the Taxation Office, and as a translator of French. Gladys died of cancer on 16 November 1956; her husband scattered her ashes at Reynella. Her ceramics, the work of one of Australia's earliest studio potters, have been avidly collected since the late 1960s and are in most major art galleries.
