Built in 1916 for the Hawthorn Tramways Trust, it ran as Tram No.10. Renumbered 116 by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board in 1920. It was sold to the State Electric Company of Victoria in 1931. The number became its present number 27. The tram continued in service until 1971 when the SEC operated system closed. The photograph shows Tram 27 heading up the hill in Sturt Street. A line of other trams is waiting. This is at the bottom end of Sturt Street Ballarat. Image of Ballarat tram 27 at the Mt Pleasant terminus with the driver/conductor putting the trolley pole back on the overhead wire. The pole on the left shows two tram stop signs. The shop on the right has adverts for The Sun, Robur Tea, TV Week and Peters Ice Cream. Tram 27 was built in 1916 by Duncan and Fraser, Adelaide for Hawthorn Tramways Trust. It came to Ballarat in 1930 and became part of the fleet of the State Electricity Commission. When the trams ceased running in 1971, it was obtained by the Tramway Museum Society of Victoria. Photo of Ballarat tram 27, southbound at Grey St. loop waiting to cross a City bound tram car. Has one male passenger waiting to board the inbound tram and a conductor (in SEC hat) waiting to board the tram and act as the conductor back into the City. Trams between Bell St. and Sebastopol during the day, were driver only. Conductors changed trams at Bell St. or wherever they crossed one another on the single track.
