Probably used in late 19th century/early 20th century by the Independent Order of Rechabites. Box found with other I.O.R memorabilia in cellar of Doll Museum at Ballarat.Dark, varnished wooden box used in conduct of ballots. Box has two round holes in top and a lockable drawer (key in it) which slides out to the side. Two funnel-shaped wooden pieces (one dark, one a lighter colour) fit into the holes at the top of box and the drawer is divided into two sections. Black and white glass voting tokens are inside box. Voters in the ballot would cast their vote by dropping a white or black token through one of the funnels into the box, to signify approval or rejection of issue being voted on.ballots, ballot boxes, voting, independent order of rechabites

On 15 January 1964 the Shire of Otway was going to poll its ratepayers about a loan required to build temporary municipal workshops and a Shire Engineer's office in the Apollo Bay Riding. This led to a number of objections at public meetings in the west and central ridings, such that a Committee of protest was formed, with a nominated Chairman, Secretary and members, to put to ratepayers their considered point-of-view of disapproval. After drafts the Committee produced a printed flyer for distribution to ratepayers summarising the Committee's position. The Committee knew and agreed with a Council Sub-Committee's recommendation to Council of a new, adequate building on one site of suitable size. However, this did not happen. Instead Council moved for loans for temporary renovations of existing buildings. This the Committee objected to believing that Council must decide on a final location before any consideration is given to borrowing money for temporary repairs. Its boundary was altered twice in 1862 and on 12 December 1864 it was re designated as a Shire. It absorbed Raywood Borough in 1915, and was proclaimed a Rural City in 1990. On 2 December 1994, with the creation of Greater Bendigo City Council, it was abolished through the amalgamation which took place between Bendigo City, Eaglehawk Borough, Huntly Shire, part of McIvor Shire, part of Metcalfe Shire and Strathfieldsaye Shire to form the City of Greater Bendigo.
