This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Ballroom dancing was a popular competative pastime in the 1920s and this certificate entitled the holder, Michael Taffe (III) to compete in the Amateur Championship of Ballarat in 1923.ballarat, ballroom dancing championship 1923, amateur.

Pop’s was a powdery wax used on wooden dance floors, scattered before a dance and spread by the dancers’ feet. It made the floor very slippery! Ordsall, renamed Southesk in the 20th century was built for John Halfey in or before 1865. The house was rebuilt in the 1870s to designs by architect Michael Hennessy. In 1882 the house was redecorated by the firm of Culls Hill & Co., who hired the artists 'Mr Vandenbrandt' and 'Signor Rizzi" to paint the ceilings of the ballroom and the drawingroom. The artistic triumph was described in detail in The Argus, 30 October, 1882. In 1947, Southesk was purchased by the Kew City Council. For 23 years it was used as a meeting place for community groups. The house was then demolished in 1970 to make way for a new Town Hall.The interiors of the two main reception rooms at Ordsall included some of the most outstanding domestic frescos painted in Australia in the late Victorian period. These frescos were executed by artists hired by the firm of Cullis Hill & Co. While a number of photographs were taken of the interiors prior to the house's demolition in 1970, this small fragment of the fresco is one of only three extant. The fresco allows conservators to examine and evaluate fresco techniques of the period.One of only two fragments of the painted domed ceiling of the ballroom of Ordsall (later renamed Southesk) which once stood at the corner of Cotham Road and Charles Street, Kew. This photograph informs the viewer of the grand ballroom at Rippon Lea homestead in Elsternwick in the late 1800s. One of 33 rooms in this mansion, built for Fredrick Sargood in 1868, the ballroom stood where the swimming pool is currently located. Louisa Jones’ (nee Nathan) love of the 1930s Hollywood style prompted her to demolish the old ballroom and replace it with the swimming pool. She converted Sargood’s billiard room into a ballroom during the late 1930s. Large black and white photograph (now sepia with age) in a ' landscape format' mounted on cardboard. In 1994, the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV) held a "Warm Up For Winter Dance" as a fundraising event during National Arthritis Week. The dance, which was held at the San Remo Ballroom, had a multicultural theme and featured performances by professional dancers and dance troupes. This photo depicts AFV Physiotherapist, Valerie Sayce, in her role as MC on the night. On 16 September 1996 the Ithacan Philanthropic Society celebrated its 80th anniversary with a debutante ball held at the Carlton Crest Hotel Grand Waldorf Ballroom. The Consul of Greece, Mr. George Veis was guest of honour. President of the IPS was Peter Paxinos. The photograph of the event was published in the local Greek newspaper 'Neos Kosmos'.The 1996 debutante ball was an important event for the Ithacan Philanthropic Society to celebrate its 80th anniversary since it was established in Melbourne in 1916.A black and white newspaper photograph of a debutante set and partners photographed at the Carlton Crest Hotel.
