"Lay people, too, were the President's guests: For the second last time that honoured Methodist tradition—the President's Reception—drew many people of the parsonage to Burke Rd Balwyn, at the invitation of the President and Mrs Turner. There was a break with tradition, too. For the first time lay people were on the invitation list. 'We felt it important in these days of total ministry that lay people should be involved,' said the President. And since not every Methodist in Melbourne and beyond could be gathered at one time and place, the invitation went to representatives from the standing committee and all the church's organisations. Speaker, the Cato lecturer Dr Kenneth Greet, entertained and stimulated those present with his personal story of one man's journey as a Methodist preacher. Next week Dr Greet will deliver the lecture for which he is primarily in Australia, during the final General Conference before union. Titled 'When the Spirit Moves' the lecture will speak to the question, 'has the Christian any clue to the future and can he look to it with hope?' Dr Greet will answer yes to that. The Rev. Dr Robert Gribben was born in 1943 in country Victoria where he was educated through primary and secondary state schools. He entered Queen’s College in 1961 in order to study degrees in law and arts, but after two years discontinued his legal studies and completed his Bachelor of Arts whilst beginning his candidature for the Methodist ministry. In 1965 he and his wife Susan became engaged, but before he could begin his theological studies he was offered the opportunity to undertake his theological studies in Cambridge University in Wesley House. After Susan completed her law degree with honours at Melbourne University, she followed Robert to England in June 1967, and they were married in June 1968 as Robert was completing his Cambridge B.A. He’d received notice that his first Methodist ministry appointment was to be in “Portland No. 2”, but as they had six months before he was to take that up, they moved to India where Robert worked for the Student Christian Movement and Susan for the Church of South India sorting out their legal records. Robert’s placements that followed in the Methodist Church were Portland and Heywood and Highbury Grove Kew, and in the Uniting Church as chaplain of Ormond College, Trinity Church North Balwyn, General Secretary of the Victorian Council of Churches, Wesley Church Melbourne, and Professor of Worship and Mission at the UCA Theological Hall and UFT. He formally retired in 2008. He has been involved with, lectured in, studied at, worked for, chaired committees or directed at one or more times — La Trobe University, Christian Television Association, Australian Consultation on Liturgy, UCA Assembly committees, Lincoln College, England, Brugge Catholic Faculty, Oxford Institute for Methodist Theological Studies, Graduate School in Ecumenism at Bosse, the English Language Liturgical Consultation, World Methodist Council, World Council of Churches, Christian Unity Working Group, the Victorian Casino and Gambling Authority, Centre for Ecumenical Studies, Cambridge Society of Australia, Fellow of the School of Historical Studies Melbourne University, Queen’s College Council, Fellow of Queen’s College, Editor of the Australian Journal of Liturgy, Professorial Fellow of Charles Sturt University, President of the Cornish Association of Victoria, and member of the Council of the Genealogical Society of Victoria. He has written some seven books and edited both editions of Uniting in Worship. In 1940 The Surrey Hills Church of Christ team played in A Grade of the Eastern Suburbs Protestant Churches Football Association. Other clubs competing that season were: Spring Road Methodist, Glendearg Grove Methodist, Burwood Protestant, St.Marys Church of England, Balwyn United, Box Hill Adelphian and Box Hill United. Alan Sneddon played in the team. The inauguration of the Association took place at a meeting held at Camberwell Methodist School Office on the 19 March 1923. The following churches were represented at this meeting: Auburn Presbyterian, Kew Presbyterian, Hawthorn Presbyterian, Camberwell Methodist, Canterbury Methodist and St Marks Church of England, Burke Road and Holy Trinity Church of England, Surrey Hills. From 1923 to 1992 there were at least 160 clubs / teams that competed through the various grades with many of these combining & /or changing names, as well as those that competed irregularly. George's grandfather was James Rayment Snr (1817-1890). He was born in Essex, England. He arrived in Melbourne aboard the “Bengal” in 1840. He married Jane McKnight on 12 March 1861. She died in 1871. James lived in South Melbourne until he married Elizabeth Brown in 1873. He moved to “Spenceycroft” at 654 Canterbury Road in 1880 - the property had a dairy. He moved to 85 Croydon Road, Surrey Hills (the house still stands) in 1886 but still ran the dairy. He moved back to South Melbourne and died there in 1890. His son James Rayment Jnr (1862-1916) was born in Emerald Hill. He married Harriet Ratten in 1882 and lived at 85-87 Croydon Rd Surrey Hills until 1914. He also owned properties at 70,72,81 and 83 Croydon Road. Harriet died in 1897. He married Victoria Benbow in 1898. In 1912 his occupation was fishmonger. In 1914 he moved to “The Wattles” at 95 Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills. In 1919 his wife Victoria owned lots 45,47,49,51,53,55 Durham Road. Surrey Hills. He died 1916 and Victoria died in 1939. James, the third, lived in Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills where he and his wife had a flower and vegetable farm. His brother was George Leslie Rayment (1894-1976), known as Les, the subject of this photo. He was born in Boroondarra. He lived at 85 Croydon Road, Surrey Hills. In 1914 he enlisted and served in the HQ staff 3rd Light Horse Brigade and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. In 1916 he was discharged for family reasons, those being that his father had died and there was no-one at home to support the family in Middlesex Road. In 1918 he married Grace Lewis at the Highfield Methodist Church. In 1919 they moved into “Clovelly”, 94 Durham Road, Surrey Hills. In 1927 his wife Grace died and in 1933 he married Celia Lewis. In 1936, with the help of his brother James, they built their new house at 14 Benwerrin Road, Surrey Hills. Celia died in 1967 and Les in 1976. Les had 2 children Dr Dulcie Grace Rayment and Norma Lesley Rayment. (Information courtesy of Mel Constable; Mel's wife is a Rayment descendant). Les' brother, James Arthur Rayment, was born in Balwyn in 1889. His A.I.F. record states - he joined on the 14 July 1915 to the 5th Field Company Engineers. His father was living in Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills at the time of his enlistment. He returned to Australia and was discharged on 22/7/1919. His occupation was carpenter; his religion, Methodist. He was 26 years and 2 months at enlistment and left Australia on 23/11/1915. James Arthur Rayment married Lilian Sarah Smith in 1920 (Ref: Victoria 1920/6780). REF: Mrs Dorothy Legg - James Rayment and his wife Elizabeth lived and farmed in Russell Street in the 1860s. The land was a dairy property and may have included some of the land later owned by the Presbyterian Church. Their sons James and Alex walked to the Balwyn State School. The urban development of Surrey Hills occurred largely followed the extension of the railway to Lilydale from 1882 and by the late 1880s a variety of sporting and other cultural clubs and societies had been established, many being associated with the local churches. Ken James researched this book for the Surrey Hills Historical Society, of which he is a member, using material and photos from the Surrey Hills Historical Society collection, material from TROVE and other sources. Reverend Harry G Mackay 1914-1988 was born in Sheffield and served as probationer to Malvern South and Burnie. He was ordained in 1945 and served as Military Chaplain in Aice Springs, then serving at Toorak, Mildura, North Balwyn, and Forest Street Bendigo. He joined the Victorian Home Mission Department as Director and became Director of the Federal Methodist Inland Mission. Reverend Mackay was President of Conference in 1970. Rev. Harry G.
