This two story building was once The Victoria Bank, in Main Street Stawell later other businesses. Photo taken in 1991. The building now restored, and the home of Ron & Trudy Smith, who conduct a book exchange.Two black and white photographs of a two story brick building once The Victoria Bank and later a Book exchange. Photo of Stawell Savings Bank, Upper Main Street Stawell. First opened on 22nd April, 1880 Note the decorative Gas Fired street lamp with Savings Bank printed on the glass. Savings Bank is also printed on the two windows. The street lamps were moved when the bank transferred to free hold premises in 1889. Location of the original Savings Bank building is not known. Two photo's, one a print of the larger black and white photo on cardboard. The image, two buildings very similar side by side. One building has two arch windows and arched door with a decorative light post out the front. The other one door with door bell and one square window. Road and gutters are brick paving.Savings Bank. In 2018, Greensborough Historical Society placed plaques in the Main Street area of Greensborough. In these photographs, GHS member Chris Foster, accompanied by GHS President Noel Withers, has photographed the installation of the 'Commercial Bank' plaque on Main Street Greensborough. The Main Street Plaques Project placed historical information about original Greensborough buildings as close to the original site as possible. Further information available on the GHS website. The Commercial Bank of Australia building was constructed by J. F. Taylor in 1907 and shortly after commenced operations as a bank. The building was in use as a CBA bank until 1976 when it was demolished and a new building erected. The CBA continued its operations at this location; subsequently, various banks, such as the Bank of Melbourne and Westpac operated there. Part of the new building is now in use as a newsagency. The original architectural plans for this building designed by Walter Butler are held by the State Library of Victoria and can be viewed online through the Library's website: Citation: Butler, W. THE RIVER PORT OF REDBANK During the 1870s, Red Bank would have been one of the busiest ports on the Murray River. When the railway line was being built from Melbourne to Wodonga all the railway material was brought up river from Echuca by paddle steamer and barge and unloaded at Red Bank. The material was loaded onto horse teams or bullock wagons and taken along the route of the spur line. During the 187 MacCulloch & Co. handled 3000 tons of railway material here' The port was operational from approximately 1870 until 1874. THE FIG TREES The fig trees and a small bank of gravel are the only visible reminders of where the spur line from the wharf at Red Bank met the main line. It was at this point that all the material for the mainline was transferred from the small locomotives and wagons from Red Bank. It would have been carried by bullock wagons and horse teams and unloaded at different places as the line progressed. After the line was completed in 1873 the fettlers from Wodonga would patrol this length of the line.These images are significant because they document an important stage in the development of transportation in North East Victoria.Images of the River Port of Red bank near Wodonga on the Murray River. 1. This photograph of a two storey building now the premises of Webb J.H. & Seng Hpa, Solicitors but once "The Union Bank". Its located at 153 Main Street Stawell. Previously the first Union bank was built in c 1888 on the corner Victoria Place & Main street and designed by designed by G. C. Inskip. This is the second Union Bank the first was second from the corner of Lanzell St. in Main St. and was eventually pulled down. The 1st bank was shown in photos by C. B. Herbert.
