It was erected by the Waranga Shire Council to commemorate the centenary of the Victorian Exploring Expedition`s passage through the Barnadown district in 1860. A plaque on the structure reads: 'Burke and Wills Centenary. The party camped near this spot on 28th August 1860 on its outward journey.
