EDHS Newsletter No 187 July 2009 JULY MEETING Our Society's collection of documents contains a wide variety of historical information relating to the Eltham district and the former Shire of Eltham. There are files relating to local people and families, localities, particular places, events and much more. There are a number of files relating to particular subjects or projects and included in these is an extensive collection relating to research by Harry Gilham on a wide range of subjects. Harry has also been largely responsible for the wall displays at our Local History Centre featuring photographs, maps and historical information. Many of our files are not properly catalogued at this stage and that job is an on-going task. Few of the files are well known to members and this is a situation that is worth correcting, not just at one meeting but perhaps on the basis of one such meeting each year. At the July meeting there will be aseries of short talks by members of the Society's Committee telling stories selected from our files. Subjects chosen by the speakers include: • The 1934 fire at the Eltham Shire Offices, Kangaroo Ground; • Reminiscences of R. D. Taylor of Eltham; • The David Harbison Home for Boys; • The land purchases of Henry Stooke, local pioneer; • Murder at the Eltham Bakery. Each subject will be illustrated with digital slides, arranged by Jim Connor. Newsletter No. 27, November 1982 ELTHAM COMMUNITY FESTIVAL Although our parade entry did not win a prize this year, it was considered highly successful from a participation point of view. Despite some uncertainty as to just who was corning, members and friends kept appearing at the assembly area . As in the past years our friends from the Victorian Folk Music·Club brought their instruments along and really added to the occasion. This year we concentrated on a rural theme with a tractor/trailer combination. Thanks to Peter Bassett-Smith for the tractor, Joh Ebeli for the decorations and friendly trailer owner Dennis McKay. Unfortunately the closing stages of the parade were marred by heavy rain. We just finished as the rain started but members scattered very quickly. This has prompted the suggestion for future parades that we have a tent or other suitable venue for members to gather after the event. This is worth following up. The cold driving rain provided a special problem for Peter in driving his tractor home to Kangaroo Ground. Have you ever had to choose between standing up to warm your hands on the exhaust and having your tractor seat flooded? The Pony Club was a dream of Diana Bassett-Smith, which came true, based on the British Horse Society Pony Club formed in 1929; a worldwide organisation. A meeting was called at ‘Lavender Park’, the home of Mrs Mary Grant and her brother George ‘Mel’ Balfour. Invited to the meeting were Baye Skues, Eric Rundle, Ben Taylor, the Barringtons, Smiths, Lou Lewis and Gwen Cascaden. They all supported Diana Bassett-Smith for forming a Pony Club. The first formal meeting was held at ‘Landscape’, which was the home of the Barringtons and the former home of artist Percy Leason. Negotiations with the Lands Department resulted in the club being granted use of the grounds in Eltham Lower Park for a peppercorn rent. Eltham was the 4th Pony Club in Victoria; the other three being Frankston, Templestowe and Western District. Together they formed the Pony Club Association of Victoria at Diana Bassett-Smith’s instigation. We visited a number of earth houses listed by the Eltham Heritage Study in a very pleasant day's outing. We then walked through the grounds of "Kinloch", the Jelbart property in Arthur Street where we saw their large mud brick house and barn. Lunch was at Marion and Russell Yeoman's house in Peter Street. This pise house was built by the Moore family in the early 1950's. In the afternoon we visited the home of artist Jenni Mitchell in Fordhams Road, one of the last examples of the work of Alistair Knox. Then we travelled to Laughing Waters Road where we saw two interesting houses owned and built by well known landscape gardener Gordon Ford.
