[article by Bettina Woodburn in EDHS Newsletter No. 109, July 1996:] ON THE TRAIL OF HUME AND HOVELL - REPORT ON THE AUTUMN EXCURSION - On a green and fresh morning (Sunday 26th May 1996) the Cobb and Co coach (driven by the most obliging Peter Tampion) set off in a north easterly direction from Eltham to connect with Hume and Hovell's route on their 1824 explorations of central Victoria. The Society would follow a series of monuments erected for the 1924 centenary of the expedition from King Parrot Creek (Tuesday 7th December 1824), through Strath Creek, over Sunday Creek (Sunday 12th December 1824) at Broadford, Tullamarine, St Albans, Deer Park, through Werribee, skirting east of the You Yangs to Lara and Avalon Beach. Because their distance-measuring wheel had broken and a one degree mistake was made in calculations, the two leaders of the original group of six convict-companions arrived at Corio Bay, instead of the expected Western Port, discovered earlier by Flinders. From below Mt. Disappointment (Hume and Hovell's difficulties in "scrambling over brush and rock", "leeches in forest, as well as no water", "cutting grass 4-5 ft. high", dreadful scrub", "devil flies") we took an easier route, saw the Strath Creek memorial in ground fog and a wonderful "field of dreams", the Hume-Hovell privately owned cricket ground with its white picket boundary fence. Now, after a steep climb, in sunshine under gums we stretched and viewed magnificent rolling hills and fog-filled valleys - not "smoke from Aborigines' bush fires". After morning tea at Broadford we followed the Sunday Creek valley beside the Hume Freeway, passed the Wallan Wallan Rest Area (more appropriately Hume and Hovell Rest Area) to tum right at Beveridge. In Gellibrand Hill Park, near the headwaters of the Moonee Ponds Creek, we experienced the landscape the first European settlers saw - huge river red gums and rolling pastures. The gardens and sheltered courtyard of the 1840s, timber, brought from .....[?] prefabricated Woodlands Homestead, provided a pleasant lunch stop. We enjoyed a private tour, panoramic views over Melbourne and surroundings and the excitement of arriving and departing aircraft. Our next river crossing was at Werribee, "in a vast treeless plain", then we drove on by-ways no coach had previously travelled, to find "an immense sheet of water" salty Corio Bay, off-course to the west. In late afternoon of a super, calm, late autumn day we headed homewards. Back at Eltham we were rather surprised to find that we had travelled a total of 347 km. Thanks again to Russell Yeoman for his research and organization. What a wonderful day! Colour photographactivities, broadford, hume and hovell, monument

In late afternoon of a super, calm, late autumn day we headed homewards. Back at Eltham we were rather surprised to find that we had travelled a total of 347 km. The gardens and sheltered courtyard of the 1840s, timber, brought from .....[?] prefabricated Woodlands Homestead, provided a pleasant lunch stop. non-fictionBeenak Road, Wandin Hall, the Stringybark Creek, Clements' shop, Wandin Yallock State School... all names that spark vivid memories for anyone who has lived in or around Wandin in Victoria's Yarra Valley. Jill Sebire invited a wide cross-section of 'locals' to share their memories of community and family life. The result is a rich and entertaining group of personal stories. This is not a formal history, though it covers many of the milestones of the community's growth since European settlement in the 1860s. Instead, it highlights the events, people and places that have stayed fresh in the writers' minds. 'As I Remember ..' ensures that these memories can be enjoyed into the future. Anyone who has lived in a small community will recognise many of the characters and activities. For those who have a connection with the Wandin district. 'As I Remember...' will bring back the sights and sounds of Saturday night dances, the annual trip to the beach, the Easter sports at the Wandin Recreation Ground, fruit-picking, football and cricket matches, and perhaps even the night the Rechabite Hall burnt down.(back cover)wandin (vic.), wandin yallock state school

In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. In the mid 1870s wealthy solicitor David Abbot bought a large block on the corner of Bamfield Street and Beach Road and built an imposing family home with a stately tower. It featured rare Hawthorn Blacks – hand-made bricks of brown-red with streaks of charcoal black. For many years the home was the most prominent in the district. In 1922 ‘Coggeshall’ was subdivided, and the house was sold to the Sandringham Club, a gentleman’s club that had formed in 1913 and required more space for its growing membership. Members enjoyed lawn tennis courts, a bowling green and a cricket green, as well as a large billiard room. The Sandringham Club still owns ‘Coggeshall’.Annette Meikle, Sandringham Club 1977, ink and watercolour, 25.7 x 35.7 cm. Bayside City Council Art and Heritage Collection. 10 minute sound and colour, which has faded to red. Begins with an unseen business man asking his secretary to ring his wife to tell her he will be late and is going to visit one of his other families. We see him driving his car, which is full of smoke from his pipe, whilst the narrator explains what Legacy does. The Legatee sheds his coat and trilby hat to play cricket with the fatherless son before having tea and cake with the widow whilst her story and that of her two children is told - details of the Legacy assistance are given. The film then moves to Legacy House where exercise classes are taking place and the smoking pipe makes a reappearance. Information about Legacy's work for the health and wellbeing of Junior Legatees is given, as well as details of the Mother's Club. The film shows the many Legacy committees at work before moving on to holidays organised for Junior Legatees at a beach side cottage - there is no indication of which city is featured at this stage but the beach could be Bondi. Widows are shown meeting at Legacy House, and then we see more elderly widows at Lady Gowrie House. Kyle Williams House for convalescent children is featured and is located near Sydney, which would indicate that the film is about Sydney Legacy. Archbold House, a hostel for girls, and Glen Mervyn House for boys are also featured, as is Cull House for boys undertaking apprenticeships. The film notes that there were 88,000 widows and children in Legacy's care, and the pipe smoking Legatee is seen driving the fatherless boy to tennis practice before the film concludes by saying that Legacy is contributing to the future of the nation. This film has been digitised to preserve its content. Melbourne Legacy gratefully acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government and Public Record Office Victoria for making this possible.A visual record of life in Sydney after the war and the huge number of children to have lost their father in WWII. Undated but stapled to a further copy of 00130 which was dated 'Xmas 1932'. Pages headed 'Camp Savige, Monday' indicate that it was created for a camp at Stan Savige's property. It recounts the cricket competition between the Dark Blues, Light Blues, Green and Orange teams. Written and illustrated by Pat Hanna in a satirical style it was clearly intended to entertain as much as to inform, but the humour would be seen to be heavy handed or not funny at all today. Nevertheless it demonstrates that campers enjoyed their stay at Somers.
