Single lenses were used to assist reading for many centuries before spectacles were widely available. This magnifying lens may be even older than its case. The simple, large glass lens is held in a hand-worked horn or bone rim. This article was handmade by Amelia Frances Selwyn probably in England after she married Lance Mallett in London. Amelia was the mother of Brenda Murray, dedicated community worker and local government councillor. Brenda was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for services to the community. Amelia Mallett was an early Croajingalong resident and she and Lance are buried in the Orbost Cemetery.This item is an example of a handcrafted item and reflects the needlework skills of women in thefirst half of the 20th century.A handmade black lacy bolero. Belonged to Mrs John Barrett (Amelia) who came to Australia with her husband and family about 1854. Lived in the Goldfields around Bendigo and finally settled at Albany, WA. The cape collar was given to me by Miss Betty Williamson. She and I are great granddaughters of Amelia. Bowl was made by Nina MacGeorge and exhibited in the September 1998 Exhibition "Tradition to Innovation" where it was acquired for the Collection. Mrs Nina MacGeorge (member). Maker is a member of the Guild's Creative Group and works in a variety of techniques.Bowl suggests fish in a pond. The bowl is made of handmade silk paper (moulded to form the pond) and Japanese Delica beads used for the water and the fish.
