Henry Morton Marshall was a doctor who worked in Gundagai until 1900. Born in England, he worked with King Thakombau in Fiji and worked at the goldfields in northern Victoria before settling in Gundagai.Microscope in wooden case. Base of microscope is engraved with the text 'R & J. BECK/LONDON/7733'. Microscope has a brass, roughly horseshoe shaped base brass plate, and brass handles and fittings. A circular mirror is attached just above the base. Microscope is stored in a wooden case, the lid of which is engraved with the text 'M. RENOU'. The case contains 16 additional parts for the microscope, including additional lenses and a mirror. The inner edge of the base is engraved with the text 'ELLIOTT BROTHERS AGENTS SYDNEY'. 'R & J. Richard Beck established a consultancy as an industrial designer in London in the 1930s, designing posters, booklets and advertisements for London Transport, Shell-Mex, Orient Line and the London GPO. His work was illustrated in Radio Times, Evening Standard and News Chronicle. His posters used montage and surrealist techniques, as in this example, reminiscent of E McKnight Kauffer who was prominent in commercial art in interwar England. This microscope is thought to be one of the earliest 'mineral microscopes' obtained by the Ballarat School of Mines. These brooches were made by Hans Beck, a German Templer who was born and lived in Palestine. When WWII broke out, he was sent to Australia on the "Queen Elizabeth" in 1941 and interned in Tatura Camp 3. His wife and children were left behind in Palestine. His daughter Ingrid said that although they were behind barbed wire, they were safe. Hans worked as a manufacturing jeweler in Sydney after his release from Internment. He sent for his family on 1947. A 1 x wooden triangular shape with a small four petal flower made of tiny white shells. A metal stick pin is attached to the back. B 1 x wooden heart shape. Two flowers on stems made from small pink shells. Each flower has five petals. A group of four tiny white shells sit between the flowers. A vase is carved into the bottom of the heart. A small safety pin in attached to the back. C 1 x wooden oval shape. Group of three pink shell flowers on green stems. Two flowers have six petals and a centre made from shells. The centre flower has only one petal. A bow of tiny white shells at the base of the brooch. Small safety pin attached to back. D 1 x wooden round shape. A cluster of shells in a floral pattern.
