Photograph - Image, Girl reading to younger children, 1880s
Four girls surround an older girl, who is reading Braille on a park bench. Believed to be Tilly Aston, the older girl has her hair in plaits and appears to be concentrated on the Braille pages in front of her. At the end of the park bench rests a man's hat and another book of Braille. This image has been reproduced widely and in a variety of black and white or sepia tones. Possibly a publicity image used by the RVIB. On one copy, there is a note that image was made around 1918, based upon clothing, which would rule out Tilly Aston who would have been in her late 40s around then.B/W photograph of girl sitting on park bench reading Braille surrounded by four other girlstilly aston, royal victorian institute for the blind, braille -

Tool - Sailmaker's Hook, Mid-20th century
A sailmaker's hook is also called a sail hook, bench hook, stretching hook or third hand. It is used to hold the canvas of a sail or similar object while pulling tight with the left hand. This ensures the canvas is tight while stitching, keeping the sewn seam straight. This tool is still in use today wherever a canvas sail requires stitching. it's design has not changed since it was invented centuries ago as a sailor's third hand, helping to keep canvas sails taught during edge stitching or repairs.Hook; sailmaker's bench hook. Metal rod with a hook at one end and a flat head at the other end. This tool would be used in conjunction with a brass swivel and a lanyard.warrnambool, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill, flagstaff hill maritime museum, flagstaff hill maritime village, sailmaker's hook, sail hook, bench hook, stretching hook, third hand, sailmaker's tool, sailmaking, canvas sewing, maritime trade, sailmaker -
Parks Victoria - Cape Nelson Lightstation
Furniture - Cabinet
The two‐door cabinet with a bench top is a simply made nineteenth century utilitarian cupboard. It is similar in style to cupboards that were built into spaces either side of fireplaces in keepers’ quarters. All have two doors simply framed around recessed central panels, which are sometimes bevelled. They are opened with a key, or by a basic knob made of metal or turned wood. Most also are made from a light‐coloured wood, which in this case is possibly Huon pine. Some are painted, others show evidence of paint which has since been removed in an effort to restore the surface, and a few retain their original wood finish. This cabinet, which has plain recessed unbevelled panels, has one internal shelf and stands on the floor without a plinth base. The bench top has basic squared edges, and a low backing with curved ends extends around one side. These features suggest the cabinet was fixed and originally built into a corner. The Cape Nelson CMP identified a similar but slightly different cabinet in one of the assistant keepers’ quarters which is shown with shelves added to the top. Other similar two‐door, benchtop cupboards that were probably built‐in include those at Cape Otway and Cape Schanck , which have since been moved out of the residences. Built‐in cabinets were standard fittings in lightkeeper quarters as illustrated by the Point Hicks Lightstation CMP, which shows a built cupboard beside a fireplace. The Cape Nelson cabinet, an original domestic furnishing provided by the Public Works Department, has first level contributory significance for its historic values and provenance to the lightstation. Two‐door cabinet with a bench top. Photograph - Street View, XX/04/1999
In April 1999, Arthritis Foundation of Victoria staff travelled to Merbein, Sea Lake, and Mildura during National Arthritis Week (NAW). These visits were conceived as part of the Rural Access Project. This photo depicts a street view of a cenotaph, a covered wooden bench, and some directional road signs in Sea Lake, on route to Mildura. The cenotaph is dedicated to the memory of Trooper John Kiley (of the Victorian Imperial Battalion Bushmen, D Squardon). The wooden bench commemorates Councillor James Mudge. Both are located on Horace St (Calder Hwy), on the corner of Best St, Sea Lake. In the foreground, there is a directional road sign indicating 'CALDER HIGHWAY' and directions to various nearby towns. A larger road sign indicates the route to the town of Mildura. At that time, the Sea Lake District War Memorial had not yet been erected, but it now stands between the cenotaph and the wooden bench. The Sea Lake Visitor Information Centre is currently located on the property next door.COL photo of some directional road signs, a cenotaph, and a wooden bench with an overhead shelter on a paved area next to a building. In the foreground, one directional sign indicates 'CALDER HIGHWAY' and directions to various locations nearby, such as: 77 WYCHEPROOF; OUYEN (partially obscured); 33 LASCELLES; and SWAN HILL 77.
