The Senior Technical Schools Athletics Association ‘Herald Shield’ is one of many timber and metal repoussé commissions undertaken by students and staff at the Ballarat Technical Art School. The School was known for the quality of its art metal work which was applied to product, interior and commemorative designs. Between 1915 and 1936 Wilfred Kenneth (c1883-1957) taught boys and girls at preparatory and senior levels, including the ‘Art Metal Work and Repoussé’ industrial design specialisation. During World War I, Kenneth oversaw the training of repatriated soldiers which catalysed into a new, a successful art metal business, the Decorative Metal Craft Company in Chancery Lane, Ballarat. The Central Deborah Gold Mine, 76 Violet Street, Bendigo, was developed from 1939 and operated as a working mine until 1954. The mine was one of a minority that continued to function during the Second World War. In 1939 the mine boasted a small timber poppet head, boiler steam winch, compressor, blacksmith shop, store, change rooms, and offices. Between 1945-46 the company upgraded the mine with extensions to sheds and the installation of new steam machinery, electric air compressor, steel poppet head, and ore bins. Johann George Schaefer had been in the employ of the Victoria Consols Mine for fifty years at the time of his death in 1914. For twenty nine of those years, he held the position of Manager and Battery Manager. He was the brother of Mattaeus Schaefer, who made the model of the horse and spring cart.Black timber frame, decorative inner edging with dark grey matt enclosing an address given to Mrs. Schaefer by the Victoria Consols Mining Co., N.L. The Williams United Shaft (New Chum Reef) is a significant historical gold mining site in Eaglehawk, a suburb of Bendigo, Victoria. Located at the end of Junction Street, this heritage-listed site contains remnants of mining infrastructure, including a poppet head, compressor beds, and a winder bed, amidst old open-cut workings and mullock heaps. The mine was part of the rich Bendigo goldfield and is recognized on the Victorian Heritage Inventory. The Old Tom mine site in the Whipstick forest, near Eaglehawk, can still be seen. The shaft has a ringlock fence surrounding it. In 1897, William E. Sheehan, was a mining investor. He applied for a lease "South Loesers Gold Mining Company' in the Whipstick, adjoining the F.G. Loesers lease. Bendigo Tramways has been in operation since June 1890. From that time, the citizens of Bendigo have experienced battery, steam and electric trams. Over the years Bendigo’s trams have become intrinsically entwined with the city’s identity and the community that they serve. In October 1888 the Sandhurst & Eaglehawk Tramway Company was formed. Construction of a 6.4km long tram line between Eaglehawk and the Bendigo Railway Station commenced soon afterwards. Half-hourly services using battery powered trams commenced in June 1890. James Moore and Sons had a timber and saw mill at City Rd., South Melbourne. They employed over 600 men with a wide range of skills, turning out milled timber for building, household items and other cabinetry, the wooden bodies of trams and even what is believed to be the first commercially produced airplane propeller. The site also included a nail making factory. These goods were sold throughout the state before the company went into voluntary liquidation in 1935. James Louis Moore was born in Ireland 12/8/1843 and died in London 3/2/1913 before his body was returned to Melbourne for burial in the family vault in April 1913. The business continued under his sons Walter, Louis and Arthur. The Central Deborah Gold Mine is historically significant for its ability to demonstrate the tangible and important links to twentieth century quartz mining. It is of outstanding historical significance as the last intact and working example of the 5,500 quartz mines that won Bendigo widespread fame as a gold mining centre. At one time Bendigo had the world’s deepest shafts. Of particular importance are original buildings, fittings and mining machinery that document the mine’s character from 1939 to 1954. (Criterion A) The Central Deborah Gold Mine is archaeologically significant for its ability and potential to illustrate important aspects of early twentieth century mining. The physical evidence at the site has excellent interpretative value and the ability to answer archaeological research questions. (Criterion C) The Central Deborah Gold Mine is significant as a notable and fine example of the class of twentieth century quartz mine. The working machinery—including a Cornish boiler, winding engine and two compressors—comprise one of the few publicly accessible and in situ collections in the State. Central Deborah Company Gold Mine is now a popular tourist mine and a living part of the story of gold mining in Australia. Handwritten extracts, with typed copies, from the Bendigo Advertiser Monday July 24th, 1933. First erected for 20 years. Mr. Cook performs Opening. Approx. 400 people attended the opening on Sat 22nd. Expected that when run in, the ore will be crushed for 2/6 per ton. Consists of 10 heads, 1000 lbs each. Boxes are of Homestake pattern with wooden horses of special timber and iron guides. Copper plate tables of ample area provided. Floors are of concrete and so graded that all washings - -. Expected later to expand to 30 head. A 114 H P Ruston-Hornsby crude oil engine is provided with a friction clutch to facilitate easy starting and will be capable of driving the battery when it is extended. Prizes were awarded for first and second placing of these events.In 1923, a Sports Carnival was held in the precincts of what was then a water reserve, situated south of the State School. The area was reserved for watering purposes on 1st May, 1894; and on July 15th, 1912, a small portion was excised. By 1923 its usefulness for water storage had disappeared, and being ideal for recreation purposes, it was decided, at the final meeting of the above sorts carnival, to apply for the area appointed, Mr W Harris (chairman), Messrs. G H Marshall, J Roberts, D Gill, M Connolly, R Vines, E Pocock, and H M Burke (secretary). The matter terminated in a Land Board, presided over by Mr McPherson, being held in Bendigo. The application was granted, but was not gazetted, until Messrs. W Harris and F J Roberts, with Messrs. A E Cook, MLA and Hon. H Keck, MLC interviewed the Minister for Lands. Soon afterwards, at a public meeting, the following members were elected to constitute the first Board of management, Messrs. W Harris (chairman), G H Marshall, A D Holden, F J Roberts (tres.), M D'Araugo, E Wright, and H M Burke (sec.). Since then the arena has been cleared and levelled by residents, and labor and material to the value of 150 pounds have been put into the reserve. At least 2/3rds of the program contain ads from business in Bendigo. Thomas Richard Flood served as Mayor of the City of Bendigo four times during his time as councillor; 1952 - 53, 1957 - 58, 1966 - 67 and 1968 - 69. Thomas Flood was born and educated in Bendigo and was a business man who owned and operated a bus company in the Bendigo District. He was also a professional cyclist and was involved in the development of the City's sporting facilities. The Tom flood Sports Centre on Barnard Street is named after him. Monica Cecelia Flood, nee Murray was born in Strathfieldsaye and together they had two sons. As Mayoress Monica Flood was patron of the Bendigo Girl Guides and involved with the Peter Harcourt Centre and Mirridong. Timber sign.
