After the buildings were acquired by the Country Roads Board in 1945, a substantial but sympathetic addition was made to the south-eastern end of the old cattle abattoir. The abattoir is significant for historic, architectural and technical reasons at a state level. as a rare surviving municipal abattoir, and represents the development of hygienic slaughtering through municipal regulations, thus improving standards of public health in Victoria. It is historically significant to the City of Greater Bendigo as a key to the primary production industry that centred on this precinct from the 1860s to the mid 1990s; they are an important surviving component of one of the largest regional livestock markets in Victoria. D'Ebro was critically influential in the development of industrial and in particular meat processing buildings, designing major freezing works and abattoirs throughout Victoria and Australia.(Source, National Trust Database). The Bendigo facility finally closed in 1945, when all slaughtering for local consumption passed to a joint export and local slaughtering facility at the Bendigo Inland Meat Authority. Over doorway: "MELBA THEATRE"...Competition from drive-in theatres and television had an impact on theatre audiences. ...Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. MELBA THEATRE, WODONGA operated in the Shire Hall building on the corner of High Street and Melbourne Road (Elgin Street), Wodonga. The Shire Hall was built in 1890. The date on the facade of the building represents the date of the formation of the Shire in 1876. In December 1929, Enterprise Pictures were screening films in the open air theatre adjacent to the Shire Hall or sometimes in the hall itself. In 1943 “Melba Theatre, Shire Hall” was advertised with that name for the first time. In 1948 Mr K Bounader, a picture proprietor from Holbrook with 39 years in pictures behind him assumed control of the Melba Theatre, Wodonga. The Bounader family continued to run the theatre well into the 1960s. The hall was also used for functions such as school socials and concerts. Competition from drive-in theatres and television had an impact on theatre audiences. Finally, the Melba Theatre screened its last film in 1968. A school speech night in 1969 is the last known event in the Melba Theatre. It was demolished along with the Shire Hall in 1971 and replaced with a supermarket and car park. These images are significant as they document an historic buildings in Wodonga which played an important part in the social life of the community.2 black and white photos of the Melba Theatre in Wodonga and its demolition Over doorway: "MELBA THEATRE"high st wodonga, melba theatre, wodonga buildings -

The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bob Skitch, the unit marched down View St in the CBD, along Pall Mall and up Gaol Rd to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor Paul Tomkinson and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1992 and 1996. Some photos in this set were also printed on photo paper and catalogued under item 6021.25P. Photos of the parade are catalogued under item 6490.53P.
