Subsequently the Australian National Library requested these transcripts, and it is (in 2000) Wendy's intention to make them copies. This scrap book has been divided into 4 parts with different Cat No's to give better coverage of the articles & photos. The article covers the award of a Life Membership to Samuel John Ryan for his years and work in Committee, Executive, Welfare and State Council. Sam as known served on the Committee of the Bendigo RSL from 1963 - 1968, 1970 - 1973, President 1964 - 1967, Snr Vice President 1973. He was made a Life member in 1968, awarded the BEM (British Empire medal) in 1973 for his untiring RSL Volunteer work. Page 2a. Frank Wright wrote the following tribute to Percy Campbell which was printed in the Ballarat Courier. "With the passing of Percy Campbell, Ballarat has lost its best known and most distinguished musician. His was no ordinary talent, but an inborn musicianship touched with genius. He was a critic of the keenest perception and many able musicians sought his advice on technical matters over a wide range. His ear was of the most sensitive kind, and among his unusual accomplishments was that rarity among musicians, "absolute pitch." Those of us who knew him well will reflect with pride that we were privileged to journey with him for a little while along life's highway. Percy Campbell belonged to Ballarat, and to Ballarat's music. He was part of the city itself. Victorian Symphony Orchestra, Capital Theatre, Bendigo. Thursday, 10th November, 8pm. This series of Concerts is arranged by the Australian Broadcasting Commission. Conductor and Soloist: Walter Susskind. Walter Susskind (with photo), During his two years as resident conductor of the Victorian Symphony Orchestra, Walter Susskind has left an indelible impression on music lovers by his conducting and his personality, both of which have endured him to concert audiences everywhere. Walter Susskind is now relinquishing his appointment of the permanent conductorship for the A.B.C. in Victoria to return overseas, and this final tour by the Victorian Symphony Orchestra for the 1955 season is also Mr Susskind's finale in Australia. An appealing future of these concerts to be presented over several provincial centres in turn will be the . . . Analytical Notes. Bendigo Concert Series Discontinued. The Australian Broadcasting Commission announces with regret that it has been found necessary to restrict the nimber of concerts presented in Bendigo each year pwing to the lack of sufficient support of these activities. Since 1947 the A.B.C. has presented a series of rour concerts each year in Bendigo. During these years artists who have appeared in the series include Ginette Neveu, Gyorgy Sandor, Erna Berger, the Robert Masters Quartet, Sydney MacEwan, Elena Nikolaidi, Michael Rabin, William kapell, Leon Goosens, Max Rosral, Sulvia Fisher, and many others of world standing. In addition, the Victorian Symphony Orchestra has given performances each year under such eminent conductor as Alceo Galliera, Juan Jose Castro and Walter Sisskind, while last year the seies included a visit by the Sydney Orchestra under Sir Eugene Goossens. While the A.B.C. in anxious to continue its policy of brining artists of world standing to provincial centres, includeing Bendigo, the quire considerable costs incurred. The Highesdt number of subscribers to a series in Bendigo was attained in 1951, when 350 season tickets were purchased. In all other uears, including 1955, the number has fallen below the required minimum, and ir has been decided not to proceed with plans for the 1956 season, although . . . Bob Conroy died on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at age 88. The Daylesford trainer and brilliant horseman enjoyed a life dedicated to harness racing, which he shared with his wife Pat and their five children, including Glenn, Anne-Maree and Peter, who themselves have combined to drive more than 800 winners. Renowned as an outstanding trainer of trotters, Conroy spent a life training from Daylesford, having been raised in nearby Korweinguboora before occupying the former Daylesford Trotting Club track, from where he would often venture into neighbouring Hepburn Regional Park to educate his horses. A trots trainer, driver and breeder, Mr Conroy’s training successes include Mary Beverley’s win in the 1973 V. L. Dullard Cup, Lincoln Star's win in the 1978 Bendigo Pacing Cup and 1978 Italian Cup, and the Lightfoot Laurels on four occasions (Lucy Lastic 1997, Miss Universe 1999 and 2001 and False Gem on 2008). His greatest stakes win came when Amazon captured the $30,000 Australasian Trotters Championship final in 1984 and then the same year the E B Cochran Memorial Trotters Cup, while notable triumphs also include Mister Everest in the 1990 Chris E Howe Trotters Cup, two Central Victorian Trotting Championships in 1991 (Omaorio) and 2005 (Sutters Glory), the 1996 Coulter Crown with Lucy Lastic, First Signal's win in the 1999 Cranbourne Trotters Cup and then the R C Freestone Trotters Cup with Miss Universe. Other notable performers he trained throughout his distinguished career included multiple metropolitan winners King’s Pride, Eden’s Return, Magic Madge, Minnesota Fats, Hot And Dry, Kyvalley Duke, Speeding Fine, Baltic Prince and Looks Like Me. Bob Conroy’s trotters Bootleg Bert and Margaret Ruth delivered his last trotting wins.
