The Victorian Ex Servicewomen's Bicentennial Bowls Tournament was also a celebration for the bowlers who, 45 years earlier were contributing to Australia's war effort. Lorna Gorman, 79, who has received the Life Member of Melbourne WAAAF Branch, Royal Australian Air Force Association, Victoria Division award for services rendered over many years. Joan Wicks, 72, was on the first ship to leave Australia, after Japan entered the war in 1941, and joined the 2/1st Australian General Hospital at Gaza. After serving throughout the war she was awarded the Florence Nightingale Scholarship and on completion took up the position of Matron of the Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. Olive Jepson joined the Royal Australian Nursing Service in early 1942 and was attached to the 2/11th Australian General Hospital in Bonegilla. The two embroidered pillow shams were made by Betty Stones's mother Daisy (nee Dale) Welsh. A number of crocheted and embroidered articles were donated to Flagstaff Hill Museum by Betty Stone who advised that they cover a period of three generations from Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees, Ann (nee Lees) Dale, and Daisy Elvena (nee Dale) Welsh. All three were accomplished needlewomen, both Sarah Lees (born 1844) and her daughter, Ann (1865) these women crocheted a wide variety of articles for use in their homes. Today we have a few surviving examples of their skill that has survived the years.This item and others in the collection donated by Betty Stone are significant for their association with the early Warrnambool pioneering families of Chamberlain, Dale and Lees. These families are listed in the "Pioneers' Register" for Warrnambool Township and Shire, 1835-1900, and published by A.I.G.S. Warrnambool Branch. The cottage was constructed in 1755 in England and was brought to Australia in 1934 and installed in the Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne.
