The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. This item came from the estate of a well known Warrnambool lawyer and is retained as a high quality souvenir of the Bi-Centenary of AustraliaCircular ceramic plate. This magnificent English oak tree is located at Tea Tree Lake park in Mortlake. This park was formerly the Botanic Gardens which were developed on what had been swamp land. An artificial lake was created there in 1988 as a Bi-Centenary project.The tree is located adjacent to the historic Montgomery Pavillion and was planted on the occasion of Her Majesty Queen Victoria's birthday on 24th May 1883. Demonstrates the way the Australian Bi-Centenary and other celebrations were carried out with souvenir prints.Framed print of a horse drawn tram (3 horses) see Reg Item 699 at the corner of Sturt and Lydiard St, within a wooden frame, with non-reflective glazing. The Ballarat Community Bi-Centenary Committee was formed in 1987. All meetings were held at Ballarat Town Hall Sturt St and the Committee was disbanded after all related activities and meetings ended and after monies had been acquitted and all matters relating to events finalised in 1988.The Ballarat Community Bi-Centenary Committee was formed in 1987 to co-ordinate activities for Australia's Bi-Centenary events in Ballarat and apply for project funding from government. The Bicentenary Education medal was produced by the Australian Bicentennial Authority as a memento for distribution to all school students in Australia in 1988. One of the many medals struck to commemorate 200 years of European settlement in Australia and distributed to all school students as part of bicentennial celebrations. This package being that of Glen Taffe of Hymettus Cottage.Cupro-nickel medal commissioned by the Commonwealth of Australia to commemorate the Australian Bicentenary in 1988. The medal was designed by Michael Meszaros and M. Tracey and minted by the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra. The obverse was designed by Melbourne artist Michael Meszaros and depicts school children climbing steps with the Southern Cross in the sky and the word 'EDUCATION' below. The reverse, designed by M. Tracey, features the Bicentennial logo, a map of Australia formed by intersecting diagonal lines. Michael Looker of the Royal Botanical Gardens Melbourne drew up the planting plans for restoring Ballarat's historic gardens at Hymettus in 1985 for Heritage Victoria. This was done as it was the only known intact Victorian era working-mans exhibition garden in Australia with surviving layout and original documentation and photographs.
