Photograph taken in 1988 of buildings in Sussex Street, Linton: house was previously Bill and Georgie Hall residence and before that a cake shop run by Stella Ralf (Stella Ralf also taught piano). Next to it can be seen the former Bennett garage building. Bennett shop and garage (petrol station) 1920s-1940s. Later (1970s-1981) run as op-shop by Mrs. Surman to raise money for Maxwell Park C.E.B.S. camp. Four soldiers mounted on horses in the forecourt of the Shrine of Remembrance. Three of the four that are named are Legatee Rex Hall, Billy Kent-Hughes and Legatee Bill Scott. The other rider's name and date unknown. An article in The Herald on 19 April 1975 mentions that Rex Hall, Jim Holland and Bill Scott would wear their Light Horse uniforms and lead the Anzac Day parade to the Shrine mounted on police horses (see 01023). Though the date on the back of the photo is 1967. It is believed these legatees rode in at least 13 Anzac Day marches. Wilfred Kent-Hughes, known as Billy, served in both World Wars, was a prisoner of the Japanese, an Olympic athlete (hurdles, Antwerp 1920) and a State and Federal politician and was awarded a Knighthood. His niece, Jane, is a Legatee in the South Gippsland Group. From another article found Colonel Rex Hall was a member of the 5th Light Horse Brigade in World War 1. Nearing the 60th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings The Herald newspaper interviewed former light horsemen including Legatees Rex Hall and Bill Scott. The caption of the photo mentions that they would be leading the Anzac march mounted on horseback that year. Th ephoto shows Jim Holland, Rex Hall, and Bill Scott with Jim Rogers (seated). The rest of the article by John Hamilton describes the Gallipoli campaign. The article was part of a collection of photographs in an album of Comradeship activities (from 1930 to 1977) see items 01027 to 01036. The Comradeship committee gathered photos of events and compiled them in a Comradeship photo album for Legatees to look through. Some appear to be trips to visit other Legatees living overseas and social occasions held in different places.A record of two legatees recounting their war experiences in the press. In 1947 Shire President Cr. Charles F. Pollard called a public meeting for the purpose of discussing the forming of an Agricultural Society to raise funds for the proposed Wodonga Hospital. Cr. Pollard was the inaugural President of the Wodonga Show Society and joined by seven past Shire Presidents as part of an original 25 member Wodonga Show Society Committee. These committee members are captured in this photo. In addition to the committee, there were 150 members of the inaugural society. The first Wodonga Show was held on Saturday 6th March 1948. The catalogue for this event is included here. Forty district farmers guaranteed £400 in prize money; £321 was taken at the gate, and money from entry fees totalled £50. A profit of £50 was made for the Wodonga Hospital. This photograph is significant as it records the founding members of the first Pastoral, Agricultural and Horticultural Society in Wodonga.A framed black and white photograph of the members of the Inaugural Wodonga Show Committee. The Satin Bowerbird is a medium-sized common bird found from Queensland to Victoria in rainforests and wet sclerophyll forest. During the summer, the diet consists mostly of fruit, with insects as a supplement. They're famous for their courtship behaviour and for decorating stick-structured nests with blue sparkling objects. With it's stunning glossy blue-black feathers, which evolve from green-brown in appearance, this Satin Bowerbird is more than seven years old, and therefore not any younger as they are often mistaken for females, which are supposed to look like the green catbird. The eyes of this mature male are violet-blue, and the bill is pale bluish white. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century.This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research.
