Dainty and Rock had an “average” age of 51 years and 273 days when photographed outside the Melbourne Cricket Club on the eve of their joint Testimonial Match on 16 November 1933. Blackie, a PMG linesman by trade, was nicknamed “Rock” because that’s what he’d call people when he inevitably forgot their names. Ironmonger, employed for over 30 years by St Kilda Council as a gardener, was nicknamed “Dainty” because he wasn’t! These men were famous for making their Test Cricket debuts when they were 46 years, 237 days old (Dainty) and 46 years, 252 days old (Rock). Whilst they only played one Test together, they were selected 24 times in the same Victorian team. It is no coincidence that the golden era of Victorian cricket coincided with their tenure. They played with St Kilda Cricket Club for nine seasons and the grandstand at Junction Oval bears the “Blackie-Ironmonger” name to this day. When on interstate tours, they shared a hotel room, where they plotted the downfall of their batting opponents. Their joint Testimonial Match was played over four days and featured all-star line-ups from three states. The opposing teams were captained by Bill “Wormkiller” Woodfull (memorial statue at Melbourne High School) and Vic “The Guardsman” Richardson (memorial gates at Adelaide Oval). The serious first class game attracted over 40,000 spectators and raised £908 for each man, around $45,000 in today’s money. In a game featuring la crème de la crème of contemporary batsmen – Bill “Ponny” Ponsford, Don “The Don” Bradman, Stan “Napper” McCabe et al – and all time doyens of the art of spin bowling – Clarrie “The Gnome” Grimmett, Bill “Tiger” O’Reilly and “Chuck” Fleetwood Smith – “Rock” topped his side of the bowling scorecard, picking up the best bowling figures of 3 for 69! Unhappily, Dainty’s old knee injury reoccurred and he had to sit out the last two days of play. Featured in "Newsworthy: Melbourne in photographs 1933-1936" exhibition at East Melbourne Library, October to December 2023. Exhibition caption by project volunteer, Ernie Ward. The article refers to the Geelong Maritime Society donating the funds to purchase the set of books. The Geelong Maritime Society Inc. was formed to save the Steam Tug Victor from being scrapped. Its public appeal raised funds for this purpose, but its efforts to stop the tug's destruction were unsuccessful. The Society was disbanded in February 1990 and generously donated the raised funds to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. Flagstaff Hill used the funds to purchase the four-volume set of The Imperial Dictionary of the English Language by John Ogilvie. The books are appropriately housed in the library cabinet of the Common School in Flagstaff Hill's village. Each book has a label with an inscription acknowledging the Geelong Maritime Society Inc.'s donation. STEAM TUG VICTOR: The steam tug Victor, built in 1951 at Gainsborough, UK, was said to be the most powerful tug in Victoria. It was once used in Geelong. A private party, currently, in 2025, researching the steam tug Victor, discovered the information that connected the vessel to the books in Flagstaff Hill's library. This set of reference books was published in 1882. The volumes are typical of books used for education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The publisher used both print and illustrations for explanations. The Imperial Dictionary of The English Language: a complete encyclopedic lexicon, literary, scientific and technological, Volume 1 by John Ogilvie, LL.D., Author of "The Comprehensive English Dictionary," "The Student's English Dictionary," &c. &c. The school she attended was Rosehill Girls School in Albury. This was one of the foundation schools of Scots School, Albury. Rosehill was opened in 1926 by a Miss Lillian Windridge, for both day and boarding students, in a large former residential property on the corner of Crisp and Young Streets and was named after her uncle's property 'Rosehill' near Kyneton in Victoria. It catered from kindergarten to the Leaving Class. The school flourished and extra space was made available at the adjacent 'Springfield' property for more classrooms. In 1934 lack of space forced 'Rosehill' to move to a new location in Kiewa Street. In 1938, Miss Windridge sold the school to Miss Anna Drennan, a well educated Scots woman with a Masters' degree from Edinburgh University. By early 1939 the school was again overcrowded and was moved to the property 'Woodstock' in Schubach Street, East Albury and the name changed to 'Woodstock School for Girls'. In 1972, the Woodstock Presbyterian Girls School and the Albury Grammar School amalgamated to form the Scots School Albury. Wilma's family were one of the early families to settle in the Kiewa Valley and had a property at Tawonga. After her marriage, Wilma moved, with her husband, to Mt. Beauty until 1958 when they moved back to manage the farm and remained there for the rest of her life.It has a social significance as it depicts the standard of literature that was expected to be read and appreciated by students in the 1930's era. As the school was situated in Albury, it meant that the student would have been a boarder as daily transport to and from the Kiewa Valley would have been impossible at that time, unlike the 'School Bus' run that is available today. At this time there was no 'secondary education' available in the valley and education beyond primary school would have been limited to children of families that could afford to send their children to board at privately run schools.Book of literature by Charles Dickens. The Mathieson families were early settlers in the Woodford and Purnim areas as shopkeepers and farmers (1850s and 1860s). Peter Mathieson was a holder of land in the Nullawarre area in the 1880s. Alice Mathieson would probably be a member of this Nullawarre Mathieson family. No other information has been found about her. This book is of minor interest as an example of a 1920s attractively-illustrated book on an area in Scotland. It is also of interest as it belonged to a Nullawarre resident in the 1920s. This is a hard cover book of 68 pages. The cover has a grey background and a colour sketch of a house by the seashore on the front cover and black lettering on the front cover and on the spine.
