This photo is dated between 1933 and 1935 based on the construction of the building next door to Hosies Hotel in 1933 and the closure of the cable lines in 1935. The second photograph has a Collingwood bond cable tram waiting to cross the Swanston Street. The new Myer Emporiun Lonsdale store dominates the south side of Lonsdale Street completed in 1927. In the distance is the dome of Law Courts in William Street together with a West Melbourne bound cable tram at Queen Street. There are a number of horse-drawn carts, one motor vehicle and many pedestrians crossing the streets. In the view are the GPO, a building advertising Kodak Australasia at the Block, The Windsor magazine, W E Thomas Dentist, and Dunklings. By the Dunklings store is a double decker bus with the destination of Spring St, advertising Zebra stove polish. A Brunswick bound cable set with a longer bogie trailer car travels along Royal Parade, Parkville with a number of men and women seated on the dummy. The buildings in the background are the University of Melbourne and the side street behind the tram is College Crescent with a 'Hail Cars Here' sign attached to a telegraph pole. Royal Parade is wide with service lanes separated by rows of short trees either side of the main roadway. The cable tracks with inspection hatches every 10 metres can be seen. These hatches allowed 'oilers' (workmen) to grease the pulleys that supported the constantly moving cable. A horse drawn cart, motor truck and pedestrians are also shown. The two photographs show cable trams being shunted into the Brunswick Cable Tram Depot or car house from Sydney Road. The first shows a horse pulling a bogie tram trailer into the car house while the second shows the grip being pushed in by hand. Note the raised position of the grip when this shunting task is performed - 1920s.
