Photograph - Cable tram in Royal Parade, 1920s

Historical information

A Brunswick bound cable set with a longer bogie trailer car travels along Royal Parade, Parkville with a number of men and women seated on the dummy. The buildings in the background are the University of Melbourne and the side street behind the tram is College Crescent with a 'Hail Cars Here' sign attached to a telegraph pole. Royal Parade is wide with service lanes separated by rows of short trees either side of the main roadway . The cable tracks can be clearly seen with inspection hatches every 10 metres, which allowed 'oilers' (workmen) to grease the pulleys that supported the constantly moving cable. A horse drawn cart, motor truck and pedestrians are also shown.
