Photograph - Cable tram in Royal Parade, 1920s

Historical information

A Brunswick bound cable set with a longer bogie trailer car travels along Royal Parade, Parkville with a number of men and women seated on the dummy. The buildings in the background are the University of Melbourne and the side street behind the tram is College Crescent with a 'Hail Cars Here' sign attached to a telegraph pole. Royal Parade is wide with service lanes separated by rows of short trees either side of the main roadway.

The cable tracks with inspection hatches every 10 metres can be seen. These hatches allowed 'oilers' (workmen) to grease the pulleys that supported the constantly moving cable. A horse drawn cart, motor truck and pedestrians are also shown.
