As part of the 1992 National Arthritis Week events, there was a Joint Walk through the Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens. This photo depicts a large group of people walking along a wide path in the Queen Victoria Gardens near St Kilda Rd, adjacent to the Botanic Gardens. The photo appears under the heading, "Arthritis Week success" on page 4 of the Vol 5 No 2, Winter 1992 issue of the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria's quarterly magazine, Arthritis Update. The tree was one of two original red river gums that pre-dated European occupation, and was the site where colonists congregated to celebrate the announcement of Victoria's separation from New South Wales on 15 November 1850. It died as the result of vandalism in 2010 and 2013. Saplings of the original are planted around Melbourne, including along the Plenty River Trail in Greensborough3 p. Michael Looker of the Royal Botanical Gardens Melbourne drew up the planting plans for restoring Ballarat's historic gardens at Hymettus in 1985 for Heritage Victoria. This was done as it was the only known intact Victorian era working-mans exhibition garden in Australia with surviving layout and original documentation and photographs.
