Historical information
City of Port Phillip postcard series celebrating the launch of the Royal Botanic Garden's Melbourne 'Flora of Victoria' 1996.
The St Kilda Botanical Gardens gardens were formally established in 1859 when a boundary fence was erected and were opened in 1861. Exotic forest trees were planted during the 1870s and Australian species were included in 1932. In 1950, the Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden was created and in 1985 it was rebuilt to a sunken garden. It is the largest garden in Australia to pay tribute to this famous rosarian.
