Major General C H Brand was born in Ipswich Qld on the 4 September 1873. he fought in both the South African war and WW1. He commanded the 3rd Battalion at Gallipoli and the 6th Brigade in 1915-16 and the 4th Brigade in 1916-18 in France. he retired after 37 years of Service and was elected a senator for the United Party in 1935, stepping down in 1947. The Haeusler Collection consisting of manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family and a set of glass negatives was bequeathed to the Wodonga & District Historical Society. It offers a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community in the early 20th century. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. John Alfred Lyell "Alf" Haeusler was born on 3rd February 1922 in Wodonga, and was the only child of Louis and Ilma Haeusler. Ilma Haeusler passed away in child birth when Alf was only six years old and he was raised by his father Louis with support from extended family. Alf never married and bequeathed the items in the Haeusler Collection to Wodonga & District Historical Society.This suitcase is part of the Haeusler Collection which documents the life of a German migrant family in Wodonga from the mid 1860s.A small brown suitcase with metal reinforcement on the corners. THE CARRON COMPANY The Carron Company established its ironworks on the banks of the River Carron in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland, in 1759, and became an incorporated company in 1773. The company was the largest ironworks in Europe during the 19th century. It supplied ammunition and armaments, steamboat engines, pig iron, cast iron goods such as flat irons, balustrades, fire grates and bath tubs, pillar boxes and telephone boxes, and even cast iron rings for underground tunnels. In 1982 it became insolvent and was taken over by the Franke Corporation, using the brand Carron Phoenix.This iron is representative of the domestic appliances used throughout Australia up until electricity became widely available for domestic use.An antique Carron iron made of solid cast iron. These types of iron were nicknamed "sad irons" from the Old English where "sad" was originally a word which meant "heavy and solid". Typically, there would be two irons simultaneously in use: one to iron with and one being heated up on the stove or in the fire. This iron has a flat bottom and back and it curves to a point at the front. It has a goose neck handle which has a twist. Irons such as this were often given the name "goose" irons. Near the front of the iron on its top '11' is marked.
