In 2018 GHS members visited Turner's Bakery in Mernda for lunch and continued on to visit historic sites remaining in the Mernda area. This photograph shows the newly built Mernda Station, part of the railway extension on the old Epping line. This station was opened in August 2018. Mernda is now the end of the line. It is sited on corner Bridge Inn Road and Schotters Road. This photograph shows the Mernda Mechanics Institute, established 1888. It was sited to the rear of the Bridge Inn Hotel on land donated by the hotel's owner. This photograph shows remnants of the Mernda Market, established in 1919 as a livestock market. It was sited on Plenty Road in the carpark of the Bridge Inn Hotel. It evolved into a weekend 'trash and treasure' market although livestock auctions still took place on Mondays. This is a picture of Sentinal Peak, showing Delley's Bridge and Delley's house. This is the second bridge built over Fyans Creek in 1911. The house is Delley's Inn, which became a regular stop-off for thirsty travellers.The photo shows a rocky peak. Identified by inscription on the back of the photograph as "Early Pitfield", and the buildings as "Matthew Hamilton Baird's . . . hotel & store". Information from Joan Hunt (see 'Pitfield/Kaleno' file) says the Emu Inn or Pitfield Hotel was at Pitfield/Wardy Yallock township on the road from Skipton to Geelong. Part of this area - foreground, to the left, was called "Buncle's Flat", named after John Buncle, a carpenter who lived in a cottage there with his family. An early timber inn on the Wardy Yallock Creek was owned first by Peter Hardie and then by Edward Langhorne/John McNamara in the 1840s and a mail run from Geelong was established to it in 1846. Matthew Hamilton Baird was the lessee or owner from 1852, and Benjamin Fernald from about 1860. In 1853, the nearby store, at that time owned by William Whitecross, caught fire. The fire spread to the hotel and both buildings were destroyed. As per the explanation the HMAS Sydney II was launched in Sept 1934, sunk by the German Raider Kormoran on 19 November 1941, the wreck was discovered in March 2008. The two-arched bluestone bridge spans the Jackson Creek on Macedon Street in Sunbury. It was built in 1860 and continued to carry traffic in and out of Sunbury until the early 1970s. The bend in the road on the approach to the east side was removed and a new bridge was built to carry the traffic. The old bridge became part of a pedestrian walk. The 'Pioneer Inn' was the first hotel to be built in Sunbury. It was on the west bank of the Jackson Creek near Powlett Street.
