McKay Factory, Yuille Street, Ballarat. After sitting for many years in a paddock and in poor condition, the harvester was donated to the Sunshine and District Historical Society. Due to the lack of storage, the Society made temporary storage arrangements at Mt Derrimut. In the 1990's the Society obtained a grant for its restoration. Once these works were completed, the harvester was then located in the foyer outside the Sunshine Library Hampshire Road Sunshine. When this library was demolished to make way for the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre, the harvester was once again put into temporary storage at the Brimbank City Council Operations Centre, Stadium Drive, Keilor Park. Prior to the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre building works being completed, the harvester went through some minor restoration works of cleaning, repairing a damaged panel and repainting. All this worked was carried out on site at the Brimbank City Council Operations Centre by Artist Robert Jackson. Once the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre building works were completed in 2016, the harvester was installed in the building and it is now suspended in the main foyer of the building. This is one of most significant objects that the Sunshine and District Historical Society has in its collection.Sunshine Hugh V. McKayyuille street, ballarat, h.v. mckay -

Created by BIGFish in Footscray, he was designed as a playful, larger‑than‑life movie mascot. He was a muscular figure holding a globe wrapped in a strip of film, symbolising movies around the world The sculpture and was built from metal, with a bold, comic‑book aesthetic and was only intended originally to last only five years, but he became a local icon instead. The Sunshine Marketplace redevelopment in 2016 included a significant refurbishment of Millennium Man but by 2020, he had deteriorated badly with rust and structural issues, and the fact that people loved climbing on him made him a public liability. The Millennium Man was removed sometime after 2020 and has not returned to the site. The wooden buildings of Sunshine Railway Station were demolished as part of the Region Railway Line works that created additional and longer platforms, pedestrian overpass with lifts for disability access. The City of Brimbank Sunshine Branch Library and Customer Service Centre was built on the former H.V. McKay Massey Ferguson Site. Eventually this complex was demolished to make way for the new Brimbank Community & Civic Centre. 5809.01 - Village Cinemas Sunshine Millennium Man.jpg 5809.02 - Village Cinemas Sunshine Millennium Man.jpg 5809.03 - Sunshine Railway Station Construction During Region Railway Line Works.jpg 5809.04 - Sunshine Branch Library And Customer Service Centre.jpg 5809.05 - Sunshine Branch Library And Customer Service Centre.jpg 5809.06 - Sunshine Branch Library And Customer Service Centre.jpg 5809.07 - Sunshine Branch Library And Customer Service Centre.jpg 5809.08 - Sunshine Branch Library And Customer Service Centre.jpg 5809.09 - Sunshine Branch Library And Customer Service Centre.jpg 5809.10 - Sunshine Branch Library And Customer Service Centre Demolition.jpg sunshine library, sunshine customer service centre, hampshire road, sunshine, millennium man, village cinemas, sunshine market place -

The building was designed by Gordon Stuart Warmington, a former Sunshine resident. The building was a substantial modernist civic structure with a distinctive boomerang / Y‑shaped plan. Its most iconic feature is the dramatic stained‑glass mural panel projecting over the main entrance featuring a modern sun motif referencing Sunshine’s industrial identity and the Sunshine Harvester Works logo. During the 1970's and 1980's additional wings and extension were added to the eastern side of the building. The building served as the City of Sunshine’s Town Hall until the municipality was abolished in 1994, when Sunshine merged into the newly created City of Brimbank. After the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre in Hampshire Road opened in 2016, the Council moved its corporate and library operations to the new building. The Alexandra Avenue site was sold to developers in 2018 for $5.58 million. The building then fell into disrepair and was subject to a number of arsonist attacks, squatting, drug taking and other criminal activity. The building is protected by heritage overlays, particularly for its stained‑glass mural and original 1960s form. In November 2025, the City of Brimbank ordered the owners of the site to undertake some emergency demolition works to make the site safe. The stained‑glass mural panel was dismantled in pieces and has been store away for future restoration works by the City of Brimbank. These photographs record the part demolition of a former City of Sunshine Civic building from December 2025 to February 2026. Its building later transitioned to new community uses, but its origins remain an important part of Sunshine’s civic and social history. This centre served as a community hub for nearly 50 years, hosting social gatherings, activities, and support programs for older residents. After the senior citizen club was moved, the centre became the Hope of Life Community Church. In January 2026, part demolition of the building started to make it safe. The club formed part of a broader mid‑century movement in Victoria to create formal social, recreational, and welfare spaces for seniors, predating many modern seniors’ centres. It complemented other Lions Club initiatives such as the Sunshine Carnival, the Annual Bonfire, and fundraising for local institutions, embedding the Elderly Citizens Centre within a wider network of civic improvement.5776.01 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 01.jpeg 5776.02 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 02.jpeg 5776.03 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 03.jpeg 5776.04 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 04.jpeg 5776.05 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 05.jpeg 5776.06 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 06.jpeg 5776.07 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 07.jpeg sunshine elderly citizens hall, sunshine elderly citizens club, sunshine lions club, hope of life community church, corio street, watt street, sunshine -

... Sunshine and District Historical Society Incorporated The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre, 775 Ballarat Road, Deer Park 3023. Brimbank Library, 301 Hampshire Road, Sunshine 3020. melbourne Peerless Holdings’ Braybrook site began in the 1890s as Pridham’s Rendering Works. ...Peerless Holdings’ Braybrook site began in the 1890s as Pridham’s Rendering Works. The rendering works produced sausage casings, meat meal, tallow, and fertiliser and operated as part of a large cluster of slaughterhouse related industries in Braybrook and Footscray districts. The founder, William Pridham was a prominent civic figure (Councillor, mayor, and community leader). Peerless Foods began in the 1950s as a small Melbourne business recycling and rendering meat by‑products with their early focus on rendering, tallow production, basic edible fats and oils. This positioned Peerless as a natural successor to Pridham’s operations. In 1982, Peerless Foods acquires Pridham’s Braybrook rendering business This acquisition gave Peerless a large, established industrial site, and by integrating Pridham’s century old rendering operations allowed Peerless to scale into a national fats and oils manufacturer During the 1980s and into the 2000s, Peerless went through a diversification process and expanded from tallow into edible oils, margarine, shortenings, bakery fats and foodservice oil. In 2005, Peerless purchased Unilever’s nonretail margarine and oil business, acquiring major Australian brands EOI, Copha, Fairy and Kremelta. This dramatically increased the Braybrook site’s production and distribution role. Peerless Holdings (Peerless Foods) now produces edible oils, spreads, shortenings, and bakery fats, supplies retail, foodservice, bakery, ingredients, and export markets. Peerless is still operating out of long-established Braybrook industrial complex, and the site remains one of the largest and longest running industrial facilities in Melbourne’s western suburbs. These tallow tanks are large, heated storage vessels that are used to hold rendered animal fat (tallow) in liquid form so it can be processed, refined, or transported. As tallow is solid at room temperature, these tanks keep it pumpable, and are fitted with steam coils, hot‑water jackets and insulated walls.evans street, braybrook, pridham -
