These photographs, taken by The Advocate newspaper in 2000, show the City of Brimbank Municipal Offices, formerly the administrative building of the City of Sunshine. In 2016, Brimbank relocated its civic operations to the newly constructed Brimbank Community and Civic Centre on Hampshire Road, Sunshine. Subsequently, the site was sold to private developers and remained vacant for many years. During this prolonged period, the building was repeatedly vandalised, and several fires were lit inside. Ultimately, the City of Brimbank issued the developer with a demolition notice. Fortunately, the stained‑glass feature façade was preserved and is currently held in storage by Council. One of the photographs captures the much‑loved stained‑glass feature façade.Sunshine Pool & Council Sunshine 464sunshine municipal offices, city of sunshine municipal offices, brimbank municipal offices

This crystal ware originally came from the City of Sunshine Mayoral Chambers, located within the former Municipal Offices on Alexandra Avenue, Sunshine. Following the 1995 council mergers that created the City of Brimbank, the new municipality constructed the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre on Hampshire Road. During the relocation process, the crystal ware was assessed as no longer required and transferred into storage at The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre. It was later deemed surplus and discarded by the Council. The Sunshine & District Historical Society recovered the crystal ware from a waste bin at the Hunt Club Community Centre during a clean‑out. The significance of this crystal ware lies in what it represents a rare surviving piece of City of Sunshine civic regalia, an object tied to mayoral authority, municipal ceremony, and the public identity of a pre‑amalgamation council. Its survival is unusual, and its rescue from disposal gives it added heritage value.Set of 8 Crystal Ware Glasses - Wine, Whiskey, Port & Cocktail examplesNilcity of sunshine, mayor

The Shire of Braybrook (1871–1951) was a vast, semi‑rural municipality stretching from Melton to West Melbourne, centred on the old Braybrook village at Solomon’s Ford. It transformed dramatically with the arrival of railways, the rise of Braybrook Junction/Sunshine, and the industrial boom driven by H.V. McKay’s Harvester Works. The area was first organised as the Braybrook Road District on 28th May 1860, after a public meeting at the Shamrock Hotel in Albion. The district was enormous, extending from Melton to Dynon Road on the West Melbourne swamp. Early settlement clustered around Solomon’s Ford on the Maribyrnong River, a key crossing for travelers heading to Geelong, Williamstown, and the goldfields. On 23rd January 1871, the Road District became the Shire of Braybrook. Council meetings were initially held in Maidstone, reflecting the early population centres. The Braybrook Shire Hall in Deer Park was built in 1885. That 1885 building was the first official hall and council offices for the Shire of Braybrook, long before the municipality shifted its centre of gravity toward Sunshine. It stood near the Deer Park Hotel and served as the administrative heart of the shire during the late 19th century. The Braybrook Shire Hall at Deer Park effectively closed as a council headquarters in 1930, when the Shire of Braybrook shifted its administrative centre to Sunshine. In 1951, the Shire of Braybrook was renamed the City of Sunshine, reflecting the shift of population and industry eastward. In 1994 - 1995 the Kennett Government reduced Victoria’s councils from 210 to 78, the largest restructuring of local government in the state’s history and this part of the City of Sunshine became the City of Brimbank. It is believed this extension table came from the Shire of Braybrook Shire Office located in Ballarat Road, Deer Park, opposite the Deer Park Hotel. Over the years this extension table was used in the Shire of Braybrook Shire Office Ballarat Road Deer Park, the Shire of Braybrook and City of Sunshine Memorial Hall Hampshire Road Sunshine and in the City of Sunshine Municipal Offices Alexandra Avenue Sunshine. When the City of Sunshine Municipal Offices in Alexandra Avenue, Sunshine closed down, this table was were presented to the Sunshine & District Historical Society by the City of Brimbank. The table is still in use by the staff at The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre, Ballarat Road, Deer Park. This table is one of the few remaining items that still connects us to the early days of the Shire of Braybrook.Wood extension table with two extension leaves and carved legs.shire of braybrook, shire of braybrook offices, ballarat road, deer park

... Brimbank. These photographs record the part demolition of a former City of Sunshine Civic building from December 2025 to February 2026. These pictures were captured after the stained‑glass mural panel was dismantled and put into storage. The former eastern end extension had previously been demolished. Sunshine Municipal Offices ...

The Sunshine Municipal Offices in Alexandra Avenue Sunshine opened in 1967. The building was designed by Gordon Stuart Warmington, a former Sunshine resident. The building was a substantial modernist civic structure with a distinctive boomerang / Y‑shaped plan. Its most iconic feature is the dramatic stained‑glass mural panel projecting over the main entrance featuring a modern sun motif referencing Sunshine’s industrial identity and the Sunshine Harvester Works logo. During the 1970's and 1980's additional wings and extension were added to the eastern side of the building. The building served as the City of Sunshine’s Town Hall until the municipality was abolished in 1994, when Sunshine merged into the newly created City of Brimbank. After the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre in Hampshire Road opened in 2016, the Council moved its corporate and library operations to the new building. The Alexandra Avenue site was sold to developers in 2018 for $5.58 million. The building then fell into disrepair and was subject to a number of arsonist attacks, squatting, drug taking and other criminal activity. The building is protected by heritage overlays, particularly for its stained‑glass mural and original 1960s form. In November 2025, the City of Brimbank ordered the owners of the site to undertake some emergency demolition works to make the site safe. The stained‑glass mural panel was dismantled in pieces and has been store away for future restoration works by the City of Brimbank. These photographs record the part demolition of a former City of Sunshine Civic building from December 2025 to February 2026.
