... ...British colonies...Australia became a Federation on January 1st, 1901, uniting Australia's six British colonies - New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania – into States of the Commonwealth of Australia. ...Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village 89 Merri Street Warrnambool great-ocean-road Australia became a Federation on January 1st, 1901, uniting Australia's six British colonies - New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania – into States of the Commonwealth of Australia. ...Australia became a Federation on January 1st, 1901, uniting Australia's six British colonies - New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania – into States of the Commonwealth of Australia. The Government of Victoria invited 12,000 guests to attend the official celebrations for the Opening of the Federal Parliament by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Cornwall and York (later King George V). The historic occasion was held at noon on May 9th, 1901, at Melbourne's Royal Exhibition Building, the only building large enough for that number of guests. The guests represented all six states of Australia with varied connections and interests, including politics, business and industry, the arts, religion, education, and public service. In Melbourne, the occasion was followed by two weeks of celebrations. The decorative, elaborate design of the certificate-size invitation represents Australia’s colonial history and its transition to the Federated Commonwealth of Australia. The National Gallery of Australia attributes the artwork of this invitation to Australian artists Norman Lindsay (1879–1969) and John Longstaff (1861–1941) and its printing to Sands & McDougall Limited, Melbourne. The invitation has no date or location details. This invitation has the label “Mr. C Swinburne” added over an original, handwritten name. Perhaps it was a spelling correction, or a late change, with Swinburne attending in the place of another citizen. The book “Our Invited Guests An Official Directory, Melbourne, Victoria, 1901” lists all the guests, but not one has the surname SWINBURNE. There are five Warrnambool listings, eight people in all: - - MoCOBMICK, G. D., Esq., P.M., Warrnambool. - O’DOWD, The Ven. Monsignor, Warrnambool. - OPIE, C. N. T., Esq. (and Lady), Warrnambool. - OSBORNE, Hy. Wm., Esq., Shire Secretary (and Lady), Town Hall, Warrnambool. - STEVENS, Mrs. F. P., Mia Mia, Warrnambool. CHARLES GRANT SWINBURNE (1864-1934): - Charles Grant Swinburne, known as Chas.., was a prominent Warrnambool figure: a member of Toc H., the Progress Association and several other local clubs and societies. He purchased Warrnambool’s Tattersall’s Hotel in 1911 and had a booth at the 1914 Warrnambool Show. In 1891, he married Susan Jane Granter (1867-19 June 1935), daughter of Joseph Granter (1832-1879) and Ann (born Holley). Joseph had arrived in Melbourne on the famous tall ship Marco Polo in February 1856. In 1868, he was a shareholder of the Warrnambool Steam Packet Co., trading along the coast of Victoria. His portrait is among those recognised on the historic Warrnambool Pioneers Board. The invitation is nationally significant for its connection with the first Federal Parliament in May 1901, where the first federal parliamentarians were sworn in, and where the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York attended, representing the continued link with Britain. The invitation also unites a local Warrnambool businessman, Mr C Swinburne, with the 12,000 guests representing their towns and states that in 1901 became the Commonwealth of Australia. Swinburn was also married to the daughter of Joseph Granter, an early pioneer recognised on Warrnambool’s Pioneer Board. Invitation: certificate size, colour lithograph on cream card with gilt highlights. The Victorian Government invited Mr C Swinburne to celebrate the Opening of Federal Parliament by HRH the Duke of Cornwall and York, held in Melbourne. The invitation has printed drawings of figures, decorations, heraldic symbols, and gilt accents behind the central figure, on the capital letters of the message, and the Advance Australia Arms. Inscribed with a handwritten label that covers handwritten text. [The event was held at Noon, 9th May 1901, Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne.] Inscription, handwritten on a label: "Mr. C. ... The Codd-neck was invented in London by Hiram Codd in 1872, and quickly became popular across Europe and several British colonies. While it has been suggested that the term 'codswallop' derived from Codd-neck bottles (specifically, from beer ('wallop') drinkers attacking soft drinks as 'Codd's Beer'), this is widely rejected as a folk etymology. ...While it is unclear how true this actually is, some say that Codd-neck bottles are relatively rare today because many were broken in order to retrieve the marble inside. They were used throughout the 20th century, making it unclear when and where exactly this bottle originated. The Codd-neck was invented in London by Hiram Codd in 1872, and quickly became popular across Europe and several British colonies. While it has been suggested that the term 'codswallop' derived from Codd-neck bottles (specifically, from beer ('wallop') drinkers attacking soft drinks as 'Codd's Beer'), this is widely rejected as a folk etymology.Codd-neck bottles are no longer in common use, but were once a very familiar sight across much of the world; this is a mostly intact version that has been preserved to today. This is a specialised design of glass bottle known as a 'Codd-neck bottle' or 'Marble bottle'. Originally, there would have been a rubber washer at the top of the bottle, where the marble falls if the bottle is turned upside down - when this washer remained, the marble would seal the bottle and preserve its carbonation. The glass is crafted in such a way that the marble will not fall below the neck of the bottle and into the drink, and that tilting the bottle at an angle appropriate for drinking from it will not move the marble to block the neck. However, the pressure of gas from the sealed carbonated drink was enough to keep the marble sealed to the rubber washer, preserving carbonation until the seal was broken by pushing the marble down into the bottle. There are several bubbles in the glass, along with cracks and scratches - imperfections both from when the bottle was originally made and from its many years of life. Unlike many soft drink bottles, there are no inscriptions or markings in this bottle - no company name or name of the drink it contains is visible.N/A20th century -

The manufacturer, Ludwig Oertling (1818-1893), was born near Hamburg and gained his apprenticeship in instrument-making with his brother Johann. He immigrated to London in 1840, where he joined instrument-maker and assayer George Makins (1815-1893). Oertling collaborated with Makins and built his first balance, which was "a twin-column assay type with a light lattice beam". By 1851, the year of the Great International Exhibition of the Works of All Nations, Oertling had established his own instrument-making business, employed five instrument-makers and by 1861, ten staff were engaged in designing and making instruments, principally analytical balances. Oertling's first twin-column beam balance was the prototype for all Oertling assay balances that were produced during the next century and exported to the British colonies: Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and India, to Europe and America." Reference: Powerhouse Collection - https://collection.powerhouse.com.au/object/550913 Brass beam balance made by Oertling, London in 1898. The scale is mounted on a wooden base board with a mahogany case, glass on four sides with two drawers underneath. On bottom of the left hand drawer, written in pencil, is the works number '21736'. A cursive 'L' on the same drawer bottom indicates 'left'. Also on bottom corner 'J.W. 28.2.98'. 'J.W' was John Wright, foreman and cabinet maker. He was Oertling’s longest working cabinet maker from1886-1928. In pencil underneath the right corner of the left drawer is '3/98'. Written in pencil inside the drawer cavity is 'E.C' in fancy script. This refers to 'Charlie Craig, employed as an instrument maker by the Oertling Company. The maker's name, "Oertling' is embossed on the base of the scale. There is a brass knob that fits in the front to make adjustments to the scales and also on either side of the exterior case to set the top of the scales. 21736, J.W. 28.2.98, E.C., 3/98mining, equipment, scales, ludwig oertling, beam balance, assay, bendigo school of mines and industry -

Australia became a nation on 1 January 1901 when 6 British colonies – New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania – united to form the Commonwealth of Australia. Prior to this time each colony acted like a separate country which caused inefficiencies and problems as the population grew. Sir Henry Parkes began the movement towards a Commonwealth. Elected delegates worked through a series of processes to finally present a constitution that would unite the colonies and give Australia a federal system of government. The people of the colonies approved the constitution in a series of referendums. The Commonwealth of Australia was declared on 1 January 1901 at a ceremony held in Centennial Park in Sydney. During the ceremony, the first Governor-General, Lord Hopetoun, was sworn-in and Australia's first Prime Minister, Edmund Barton, and federal ministers took the oath of office. The first federal elections for the new Australian Parliament were held on 29 and 30 March 1901. The first Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia was opened at noon on 9 May 1901 by the Duke of Cornwall and York (later King George V). For more information see https://peo.gov.au/understand-our-parliament/history-of-parliament/federation/the-federation-of-australia The item is significant as both a written and pictorial document pertaining to the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia. The magazine supplement, put out by the Sydney Mail, is a celebration issue for the new Commonwealth of Australia. It provides written background on the formation of the Commonwealth, maps of Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide and pictorial photos of each state and it’s capital city. It includes the portraits of: delegates to the National Australasian Convention, 1891; delegates to the Federal Convention, Sydney, 1897; delegates sent to England to see the Commonwealth Bill through the House of Commons; the Earl of Hopetoun, first Governor-General of Australia and Queen Victoria. Being a magazine supplement, it has pages at the beginning and end devoted to advertisements for a variety of goods ranging from jewellery to farm machinery. flagstaff hill maritime museum and village, great ocean road, shipwreck coast, commonwealth, federation, jan 1 – 1901, sydney mail, commonwealth number, melbourne 1901, sydney 1901, brisbane 1901, adelaide 1901, capital city maps 1901, victoria, tasmania, new south wales, queensland, south australia, western australia -
