The British Empire Exhibition at Wembley Park ran for two years from 1924 to 1925. It was designed to strengthen the bonds of Empire, stimulate trade and demonstrate British achievements in industry and commerce. A British flag that was used occasionally at Comradeship events. The maker was Evan Evans of Melbourne and the label said they supplied flags for the XVIth Olympiad - which was Melbourne in 1956. Commonplace postcard sent by Frank O Brien World War One veteran and former patient of the repat, to his father from France during World Ward One. This item is not of great significance. Its value to the hospital collection is that it is memorabilia of Frank O'Brien a former patient and benefactor of the repat. Quite possibly this event was held at the North Melbourne Ragged Boys' Home, so there is every possibility the members of the home produced the serviette. Monash joined the Melbourne University company of the militia in 1884 and became lieutenant in the North Melbourne Battery in 1887. "WELCOME HOME TO GENERAL MONASH. Ex-members of the North Melbourne Battery Australian Garrison Artillery, have arranged a welcome home dinner to their former commanding officer, Lieut.-General Sir John Monash. All ex-members interested are requested to meet on Saturday evening at the Ragged Boys' Home, Latrobe street." They are both pieces of ribbon used for the opening of the snowy River Bridge on July 4 1922. The ribbon was made to represent the red, white and blue of the British flag. This was the second bridge over the Snowy River. The first bridge was officially opened in August, 1893 (ref. S.R.M. 12.8.1893) by Mrs W. Watt, the mother of Councillor Watt, who presided over the opening of the 1922 bridge. This bridge was extensively damaged when a herd of cattle allegedly stampeded over it causing the cable to snap. Even after repairs it became obvious that a new bridge was needed. This second bridge, was built by the Victorian Railways and the Country Roads Board. Constructed at a cost of 35,000 pounds and used second-hand girders from the Flinders Street- Spencer Street viaduct. On July 4 1922 it was officially opened by Mrs James Cameron. Unfortunately, her husband, who had long championed the building of the bridge so that it would be ready for the railway to continue to the border, was too ill to attend the ceremony. In fact, James Cameron died on July 13 after a long and severe illness (ref. S.R.M. 20.7.1922). Souvenirs kept by enthusiastic spectators like this have helped to preserve the history of an important Orbost event.Two pieces of ribbon in British flag pattern of red, white and blue. This postcard was hand-embroidered in France and sent to Australia during World War I. A large piece of silk would be hand-embroidered by French women with the same pattern 20 times or so, then the large completed piece would be sent to a factory to be cut up and the individual pieces mounted on card. They had varying themes and patterns, greetings such as happy birthday or thinking of you, featuring butterflies, flowers and sometimes patriotic flags of allied countries involved in the war. They were marketed to troops to send home to female members of the family and girlfriends. It was estimated 10 million silk postcards were produced in Europe between 1915 and 1919. During World War 1 postcards were a welcome means of personal communication for many people. This badge was produced in 1935 either as a sale item or a presentation item in connection with the Jubilee Spring Fair at the Anglican Christ Church in Warrnambool. Christ Church in Henna Street was designed by Nathaniel Billing and opened in 1856 with the northern portion of the nave added in 1860. The square tower, designed by Andrew Kerr, was added in 1882. Christ Church today still holds an annual Spring flower festival.This badge is of interest as a memento of a function held at the Anglican Christ Church in Warrnambool over 80 years ago.This is a circular metal badge with a painted white background with a blue edging, a coloured British Flag and blue printing.
