This box of sampled is typical of those issued to official manufacturers of military badges, insignia, and buttons to ensure the gold colour remained consistent. These badges were held by the Third Army Quality Assurance Unit (3AQAU). The manufacturers were often local companies, where an example of a typical supplier is KG Luke who also manufactured the Brownlow Medal, the award given annnually to the Australlian Football League's best and fairest player.A rectangular wooden box with a black velvet-like cushion in one side. cushion has 10 examples - 2 of each kind - of military insignia and buttons of two different shades of gold colour. Box opens on one long side and is hinged (4cm brass hinges with 3 screws in each side). Clasps on opposite long side, also of brass. Wood has been stained a dark brown. He delighted in applying gorilla-like tackles and bone-shattering bumps to open up opportunities for his allies. During the last few seasons of his career a severely damaged knee saw him ignore agonizing pain to continue to contribute. He just loved footy! Although quite short for a key position, he was able to produce spectacular results frequently. He possessed remarkable ground play, elusiveness and goal sense. Amazingly, he was able to snap goals with either foot from virtually anywhere within range. Many of his goals came from kicks over his head or shoulder as he ran away from the scoring area to dodge opponents. He was fast, clever and a good mark. His League career commenced spectacularly; in his first two matches he scored a total of 19 goals. He later became the first player in history to score 10 goals or more in two successive matches (Round 15 and 16, 1932). In that year he became the first Geelong player to score 100 goals in a season. During 1935 he played successfully in the centre. Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer Born: 10/03/1935 From: East Perth (WA) Height: 191cm Weight: 94kg Natural kicking foot: Left Guernsey number: 5 First senior match: Round 1, 1962 v Carlton at Princes Park Many people believe that he became the Cats’ greatest player in his relatively short six-season career. Arriving to play at Geelong in a blaze of publicity at the age of 27, his participation in the 1962 intra-club practice matches attracted unprecedented spectator interest. Despite suffering a severe knee injury in the opening minutes of his first League match, he immediately demonstrated his wide range of skills. He is regarded as the greatest handpassing exponent in the history of football and was one of the first players to use it as a method of attack. Frequently he achieved distances of 30 to 40 metres with hand passes to team-mates in better position. His ruck work was also quite revolutionary. He developed the technique of leaping for the ball slightly earlier than his opponents and gaining a 'ride' higher into the air. Often he would, in preference to a conventional tap-out, roll the ball down one arm and handpass to a team-mate running past He developed this technique with Bill Goggin in particular. He was sufficiently versatile to play successfully in any key position or as a relief ruckman. Tragically, in 1994 a badly broken leg severely restricted his mobility and kicking power. Despite such restrictions, he retained his effectiveness by developing additional team skills. His ball-winning skill, judgment and ability to concentrate were obvious. He always played the game fairly but strongly, and no player tried harder to perform well. His kicking wasn’t stylish but generally it was effective. He liked to knock the ball clear of opponents and shoot after it at great speed. He won the club Best and Fairest award in his first season – an outstanding achievement in a Premiership year.
