This photograph was taken in 1900 at Buchan. The River View Hotel was established in Buchan in 1884 and was possibly first called the Cricket Club Hotel. The isgn at the front of the building suggests that a ? Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. The series of 60 photographs that comprise the series was issued c. 1876 and reinforced a neo-Romantic view of the Australian landscape to which a growing nationalist movement would respond. Nicholas Caire was active as a photographer in Australia from 1858 until his death in 1918. This photograph probably taken during Terang day. The people of Terang used to come to Port Fairy by train for the day and lots of events were put on for the people to take part in. This book was produced by Ron Anderson, a resident of Cann River in 1985 - 159 years following the establishment of Victoria. It contains a collection of photographs as well as a brief history of the Cann River District. This book is a pictorial record of Cann River and as such is a useful research tool.A large format black covered book, titled, "The Cann River Collection Volume 1". On the front cover is a black and white photograph of a four-wheeled buggy pulled by four horses standing outside a hotel. It contains a collection of photographs of the Cann River district.

The newspaper clipping caption is incorrect. The Club Hotel featured in the article was located on the north side of Mount Dandenong Road. It was destroyed by fire in 1890 prior to re-opening later on the south side where it operated until sale and demolition in 2020 to make way for a retirement village. (See PDF attached - "SS0067 Vic Collections 3754b - Club Hotel Fire 1890").Early View of Club Hotel, Ringwood East. Weatherboard with iron roof. Single chimney on one end. Picket fence on RHS. Two horse-drawn vehicles standing out front including three adults and two children. Source/date of newspaper unknown. Later newspaper item also attached reporting hotel being destroyed by fire in 1890.Caption: There was 'antimony in them thar hills' at Ringwood when this picture was taken in the 1890s. At that time the Club Hotel in Mt Dandenong Road, East Ringwood was owned by a George Wiggin. There were antimony mines operating nearby. The present-day Club Hotel is on this site.
