The William Buckland Trust (now Foundation) provides support for disadvantaged Victorians through support for four key areas. The growing need for space at the Association for the Blind's offices in Kooyong was constraining the amount of people who could benefit from it's programs. With the assistance of the William Buckland and Hecht Trusts, the adjoining blocks of flats fronting Glenferrie Road were acquired and eventually demolished to make way for the Vision Resource Centre. The support from the Buckland Trust in 1968 was not forgotten however, and this plaque acknowledges the support gained in purchasing the land.Digital image of metal plaques attached to a boardThis historic plaque recognises the outstanding contribution that the Buckland Foundation made to the purchase of the site on which the Vision Resource Centre now stands. LTCOL Frank Buckland was the CO of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment from 1962 to 1965. After promotion to COL Buckland was appointed as Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from March 1967 to August 1972. COL Buckland was promoted to Brigadier (retired) to the honorary position as Colonel Commandant from January 1973 to January 1976. WO2 Don Taylor served in the Australian Army from 24th October 1960 to 31st December 1987 and ended his service as a commissioned officer and reached the rank of Major. Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. I am interested in the history and practice of weaving and textile production and the growing of cotton in different areas of the world, especially as it relates to my Lancashire, UK heritage. The cotton painting drop cloth has been dyed with Australian native plants and the warp threads exposed by removing the weft showing the simple robust structure of this fabric characteristic of the interlacing of warp and weft in plain weave. The formal dinner commemorated the 50th Year Jubilee anniversary of the Royal Australian Survey Corps’ formation. Known personnel in the photographs were Brigadier Don Macdonald AM, Director of the Survey Corps and LTCOL Frank Buckland OBE, who was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment.
