Some of the students from Bulla Primary School were taken to the local recreation ground to meet the former councillor. Pauline De Luca who was there to 'turn the first sod at the site'. The work was done by the former Bulla Shire Council on the Bulla Community Centre. Councillor Pauline DeLuca was driving the grader and 'turning the first sod' at the beginning of the upgrade work that was done on the Bulla Community Centre. She was the councillor who represented that area in the former Shire of Bulla. The photograph was taken from the west side of Bulla Hill near Loemans Road, which is west of the township of Bulla. The rocks outlining the name of the town were a landmark when approaching the township along the Sunbury Road on the west side of the town. A coloured photograph of the bluestone bridge which spans Deep Creek at Bulla. The photograph is taken facing upstream. The bridge was constructed in 1869 and replaced a ford crossing further downstream. Many bridges in the South West of Victoria were constructed from Bluestone basalt rock because the area is on a large volcanic plain and that rock is in abundance. The building photographed was one of the buildings erected on the former Bulla Primary School site. There are a series of photographs in the collection which featured school improvements which were carried out on the building and the grounds in 1994 at the Bulla Primary School No. 46. The improvements included painting the school buildings, installing new playground equipment and laying our the school garden to include a vegetable garden. The first classroom to be built was a bluestone building, which opened in 1870. In the mid 1980s the names of all government schools were changed. The title for schools from Prep to Grade 6 changed from state school to primary school and former high schools, with a few exceptions, became known as secondary colleges. The phtograph was taken by Alfred Sinel who was the local photgrapher in Sunbury. The four arched bridge spans the river at Deep Creek, Bulla. The bridge replaced the forde crossing which is in the foreground of the photograph. St.Andrew's Presbyterian Church at Bulla was built on Crown land that the congregation received on 6th September 1858. It overlooks Oaklands Road and the surrounding farms as well as the Tullamarine Airport. The building at the rear is the former manse. It functioned as a place of worship for over 150 years and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2009. The school in the photograph is Bulla State School No. 46 and was originally known as the Government -funded Bulla Common School, built 1870 - 1871. With the passing of the Education Act in Victoria in 1873 it became known as Bulla State School No. 46. The original building comprised of a rectangular shaped bluestone building with a 3 roomed residence attached. As school enrolments began to increase in the district, a weatherboard classroom was added in 1881 and later extended in 1927 adjacent to the original building with a covered walkway between the two buildings. The modern portable classroom was added in the 1960s. Bulla Primary School closed in 1996 after much local controversy. The property is now privately owned. The building in the photograph is a present day view of the former Lochton Mill which was built on a bend of Deep Creek in Bulla on 1856 on property owned by Captain William Morrison Hunter. Portable classrooms being brought into a school was how many schools accommodated children when there was an increase in student enrolments and there were insufficient classrooms available at a school. This portable room was transported from Macedon Primary School in September 1984 and it became known as Room 1 at Bulla. The children in this combined infant class attended Bulla Primary School in 1993. In rural schools it was common practice to combine a number of classes in the one room with the one teacher.The two pre-digital photographs were taken at the same time and feature an infant class in their classroom with their teacher at Bulla Primary School in 1993. The coach was at the school for the Colonial Day celebrations which has been included as part of the students' history studies.
