The children from Bulla Primary School enjoyed an excursion to the sailing ship the Polly Woodside which was moored on the south bank of the Yarra River in Melbourne. They had the opportunity to look all over the ship and its workings were explained to the children. In this image three children are trying to turn the steering wheel on the ship's deck. Polly Woodside. The Polly Woodside is a three masted barque with an iron hull built in Belfast in 1886. That date is displayed on the ship’s bell. It was built to carry coal and wheat between Britain and South America. It continued on this route until steam powered ships superseded sailing vessels. In 1968 it was brought to Australia and eventually was acquired by the National Trust of Victoria for preservation. It is now preserved in the South Wharf precinct and cared for by volunteers. As well as having a guided tour of the Polly Woodside, the children from Bulla Primary School also enjoyed a ferry ride around the Port of Melbourne where they saw the port at work different vessels in port. On this day they were able to see a large naval ship although it was not docked at Station Pier where a lot of navy vessels often dock. Captain Cook's Cottage was dismantled in his village in England and rebuilt in Melbourne's Fitzroy Gardens in the 1930s. Since then it has been an attraction for many visitors although there is little relationship between Captain Cook as he never set foot anywhere in Victoria. Brothers homes and Andrew Chirnside, who emigrated from Scotland, built the Italianate -style mansion on their Werribee property between 1874 and 1877. They were pioneering pastoralists who foundered the Chirnside Pastoral Empire. The Victorian Government purchased the property in 1973 and it opened as a tourist attraction in 1977 run by Parks Victoria. The police with their rescue helicopter visited the Bulla Primary School and talked to the students about their work and the importance of the rescue helicopter.The children were also able to see the helicopter up close. The police flew to the Bulla Primary School in their helicopter to give the children an understanding of the work of the Police Helicopter service as well as showing them the helicopter's workings up close. The building is the Glendale Park Primary School situated in Sunshine West and opened in 1976. The multicultural school with 150+ students from thirty different cultural backgrounds runs a very inclusive program. The students from Bulla Primary School visited on the 3rd March 1993 and enjoyed the day learning about the school and participating in a number of activities with the students.
