A set of 14 glass plate slides of official photography from the Battle of Buna-Gona in 1943. The images were originally taken by famous photographer George Silk, and have featured heavily in histories of the campaign since the war. The slides themselves are 'photographs of photographs' evident by the pins holding down the corners of the images. The slides were likely taken for educational purposes, and would have been used during the war. Pte G G Whittington of the 2/10 Bn gropes his way to an aid station guided by a Papuan boy. An emergency field dressing covers the face of Whittington and he died from his wounds 2 days later. Norman Whitehead served with 7/21st Light Horse prior to WW2. He served with 2/6th Armoured Regiment in New Guinea in WW2 and was awarded the Military Cross at Buna. In May 2000, the Victorian Mounted Rifles Squadron 4/19 Prince of Wales's Light Horse relocated from its depot, Buna Barracks Albury to a new depot at Building 105 North Bandiana. The relocation included the regiment's heritage collection, and its heritage vehicles needed to be moved. Buna Barracks had been home to the 8/13 VMR since 1948, and to the city's citizen soldiers for fifty years prior to that. Following the move the historic Drill Hall was demolished and the land sold for residential development. The 8/13 VMR Museum opened in 1988 in a vacant married quarter at Buna Barracks, Victoria Street, Albury. Colonel G K Howard, Director of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps was the Reviewing Officer. The Pipes and Drums of the 5th/6th Battalion Royal Victorian Regiment provided the music for the occasion.
