Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Flag - Burgee, framed, 1980s
National significance. Presented as souvenir by Commodore Mr Andrew M. Cannon AM, of the Australian Yacht Squadron. Date of presentation unknown but commemorates America's Cup victory of Australia II in 1982. Commodore Dacre Smyth, who designed and presented the Naval windows in the MTSV chapel , was also a member of the Squadron. The burgee was designed by Nigel Abbott, twice world sailing champion and graphic designer. The burgee design features the Commonwealth Star in the corner, the A for Australia and the nautical colours of Royal blue – as per the Oxford Concise Dictionary – red and white.A link and souvenir with a significant event in the life of yachtsmen and for the City of Perth and Australia in 1982. The first time in many years that the USA lost this coveted cup and contest.Mounted triangular pennant style Australian Yacht Squadron flag also known in yachting circles as a burgee. Red, white and blue colours with white star in the middle and Red 'A' on top left. Gilded wooden frame with glazing with three window label inserts. Mount includes at lower right a souvenir green rectangular piece of the Australia II Spinnaker used to win the America's Cup in 1982. Sticker on back of frame has framers details.'Commodore Andrew M. July 2010 annual luncheon of 25 Year Member Association of Yacht Squadron, organised by Past Commodore, Harry Leggett. Old used Squadron Burgee signed by many present including longest serving member at time, Bill O'Day (1939) and Bert Ferris (1943). Also signed by Commodore of the day Stuart Tait and several past Commodores. Image record of this event on hand and also of 2009 luncheon. Similar signed burgee on hand of Committee January 1998.Unique for signatures of attendees at event.Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron burgee in fabric of size flown above club house and with tail frayed away from use. Triangular flag red background with white cross set vertically. Seven pointed star set in top left quadrant. Crown in centre. Signed by members attending the 2010 25 Year members luncheon. Institutional foundation stories have a tendency to change and develop with the passage of time and much repetition. Maritime social historian R.W.H. Miller here explores the life of The Rev. John Ashley and his association with the foundation storyof the Mission to Seafarers, the work of which society is much admired by its present Patron, HRH the Princess Royal. The traditional story is that Ashley's son, out walking by the Bristol Channel with his father, in the early 1830s, asked how the islanders could go to church. Ashley went to see, and from the islands of Flat Holm and Steep Holm seeing large fleets of wind bound ships, asked himself the same question. He used his own money (deriving mainly from the trade of sugar and slaves) to build a schooner, which he sailed in all weathers to provide an answer, in the process creating for himself a place in the ancestry of several Anglican and Catholic societies, of which the Mission to Seafarers, the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen, and the Apostleship of the Sea, continue to provide seafarers with a valued and often heroic service.A 123-page book by R.W.H. An example of elaborate enamel signage acquired as a result of the long standing close links of Naval forces with the Mission to Seafarers from 19th C onwards. A rectangular black enamel sign on metal ground featuring polychrome insignia of Naval Ordnance Inspection and Design. The insignia shows circular border of ropework encircling a red ground depicting a black and white cannon with a large lynx type feline. The ropework border is surmounted by a stylised crown like structure comprised of: a split focsle?, two sails with red pennants or burgees and stern of a galleon and around the band of the crown a red 'jewel' flanked by two blue green 'jewels'Insignia wording in yellow on black ground in upper case letters: " NAVAL ORDNANCE INSPECTION / AND DESIGN / SAFETY AND QUALITY " Below insignia in white paint in upper case letters: "INSPECTOR NAVAL ORDNANCE / MELBOURNE" ordnance, naval, design, safety, inspections, insignia, badge, sails, cannon, lynx
