The school was started in 1861 by the Anglican Church and was known as Harkaway. At that time the area was heavily timbered and supported market gardens, orchards and timber cutters. As the oldest living student of the Burwood East Primary School, Jack King cut the pioneering cake. The stadium was financed by basketball patrons under administration of the Nunawading Basketball Association, a non-profit community advancement company.
