Thomas John Barton was born in 1836 in Gloucestershire and after his father died in 1850 arrived in Melbourne in 1852 along with his mother, adult sisters, younger brothers, his uncle, his uncle's wife Suzanna and their family. Thomas tried gold mining at Woods Point but found it too difficult. He then partnered with Ewen Hugh Cameron to provide the miners with meat. In 1864 they purchased a plot of land in Marysville and set up a butchers/abattoirs and from there began their business of taking supplies to the miners at the nearby Woods Point and Jamieson goldfields. In 1865 the business was firmly established and Thomas married Selina Croker at Heidelberg and brought her back to Marysville. Their first home was 'The Chestnuts', which included the store, and was situated on the town side next to the Steavenson River. Sadly, in 1876 Selina died of complications after giving birth to their sixth child. Thomas was in need of a nanny to care for his six children, including the newborn baby, and so he employed Emily Ada Sparke, who is the eldest daughter of the local school teacher. Thomas and Emily subsequently marry in 1878 and they go on to have a further 10 children over the next several years. Thomas assisted in the establishment of the first school in Marysville in 1870 and remained a very active member of the community including as a Councillor for the Shire of Healesville, Shire President and he was also appointed as a Justice of the Peace. Thomas died in Carlton in 1911. After their father's death, his sons Fred and Frank took over the family business, which was then known as Barton Bros Store which continued to operate until sometime in the 1970's.marysville, victoria, barton's store, thomas john barton, ewen hugh cameron, woods point, jamieson, gold mining, goldfields, selina croker, the chestnuts, emily ada sparke, shire of healesville, fred barton, frank barton, barton bros store, francis adam barton, frederick john barton, advertising flyer, flyer -

... Samuel Skelton Parker's Butchery and Bakery, Barnawartha, Victoria...Samuel Skelton Parker's Butchery and Bakery, Barnawartha, Victoria Photograph Samuel Skelton Parker's Butchery and Bakery, Barnawartha, Victoria ...Samuel Skelton Parker was a native of Ballymena in the County of Antrim, Ireland and came to Melbourne, Australia in 1854. He was engaged for two years as a storeman. After mining in the Ovens district for five years he next became overseer on a station in New South Wales. He was married to Bridget Cusack in 1865 and they had a family of 4 sons and a daughter. After returning to Victoria Samuel Skelton Parker started a butchering business at Barnawartha and in 1881 he combined it with a bakery. This was the first business established in Barnawartha. Samuel had several properties in the township as well as his business premises and private residence. His horse drawn butchers cart made a run to Wodonga three days a week supplying the wayside pubs and Railway Gate House owners. Bread was sold for five loaves for one shilling, meat was two pennies per pound. In 1890 Skelton decided to give up butchering and baking and moved to Wodonga. He bought a 'Bush Block' of 150 acres on Fergusons Lane, now Parkers Road. Skelton called the property 'Park Hall' after his home in Ireland. On this new property Skelton raised sheep and he also sold chaff around the district. When Skelton died on 14 October 1897 the farm was split up with two sons Sam and Jack continuing the running of the farm, whilst the other two sons William and James joined the Victorian railways. Samuel and Jack continued to successfully manage the farm until 1974 when the Albury Wodonga Development Corporation acquired the land for the planned development of the region. In 2026 this is the location of Park Hall Retirement Village and the Wodonga Golf Club are situated on Parkers Road. This image is significant because it records one of the earliest businesses established in Barnawartha, Victoria. Two black and white images of Samuel Parker's business in Barnawartha, Northeast Victoria.parker family wodonga, early wodonga settlers, barnawartha, samuel skelton parker -

It was located near the corner of what are now Main Street and Monbulk Road, near today's Madigan Way. If the butchery in the photograph - which was likely taken in the first decade of the twentieth century - is indeed Couper's, this photo is likely looking down Main Street from the intersection with Monbulk Road. These copies were made in 2006.This photograph captures an earlier phase of Emerald's development, not long after the opening of the first Butchery and long before the town had sealed roads. This item includes photographs a, b, and c. The printed black and white photographs depicts an unsealed road, following the centre of the image before curving right over a hill and out of sight. In the background, four wooden structures are present beside the road on the left. In the foreground on the right, another wooden building with a chimney and a metal verandah and roof stands a distance back from the road. In a and c - identical photographs - two distant figures - likely women - stand under the verandah. In b - a slightly different phootgraph from the same angle - a horse and cart is in front of the building with several individuals. Behind the house on the right, trees with sparse leaves rise into the sky, nearly reaching the top of the frame. In the far background on the left, a wooded hill rises above the row of buildings. a is very blurry and a significantly lower quality copy than b or c.a, b, and c Obverse: "Emerald Township" b Obverse, Printed: "COPIES MAY BE PURCHASED FROM TH" b and c Obverse, in-photo sign (unclear in a): "BUTCHERS" a Reverse: "10 27 EMEF24~1.JPG 5 16.12.06 18.12.06" b Reverse: "J9505398 4/6 00000004.jpg / JOB3819505398 Emerald Old Emerald 2 adjt" c Reverse: "J9505398 1/6 00000001.jpg / JOB3819505398 Emerald early 1.jpg Kevin+"emerald, 1900s -
