Part of the Alfred Boland collection, refer Cat No 2473.Canvas "Square" bag with shoulder strap bypass buckle. Colour green/brown. Both sides have little pockets, kept shut with press studs. The top lid is kept shut with an American Pattern clip and post system. Inside the bag are two little pockets. The bottom 'Pocket' covers the drain hole. This stretcher consists of two shafts of long grain light timber 45mm x 45mm. The ends of the timber have been turned down to form a handle. Underneath each shaft is a metal “foot” with an interlocking steel lever to the other shafts foot. On top is a khaki canvas section. Near the end of the canvas are 4 eyelet holes. Also sewn on top is a leather belt and buckle near each end. Length of the leather belt is 430mm - width 25mm. The lens' are in a two piece design set at 2 angles mounted on the top. Front is a small anti glare lens of a squarish design. The pivot for same has a spring loaded locking mechanism. This can be locked into an up or down position. The space for the nose has a layer of soft liable leather. The goggles are held to the face with 2 large semi stretch cord rings. The rings in turn have a 32 cm leather strap joining the rings at the back of the aircrew's head. Inside is a leather section at the top of the nose bridge and there is a block of India rubber above and below each eye. Frederick Simons collection. Refer Cat No 10159Tool roll, small, cotton drill. When opened it reveals that right side has 2 simple pockets with 8 smaller slots for small tools. The top and bottom have 4 cm flaps that fold over to keep the tools in place. The left end has a curved flap that shuts the tool roll. There are two cotton cords sewn into the end of the closing flap. There is a four string cord stuck through the closing flap in an ad hoc manner. It forms a c.100mm loop. The HMAS BENDIGO (1) was a Bathurst type Minelayer/Corvette. It was made in Australia. Launched 1 MAR 1941 and paid off 27 SEP 1946. The ship had a normal complement of 85 hands. The ENSIGN is the standard pattern Royal Navy ensign in use at the time by The Royal Australian Navy. The Ensign has five written names including the Captain and has 85 autographs. All but two have been identified. Referring to the sailor's service cards, the signing probably occurred between OCT 1945 to FEB 1946. Post WW2, the Ensign was presented in gratitude to the City of Bendigo where it was on display in the Old Town Hall for decades. The City then gifted the Ensign to the Bendigo and District R.S.L. After some time the RSL lodged the Ensign with the Soldier's Memorial Institute Military museum for safe keeping.The main part is of a strong open weave white cotton. The flag is divided by a bright red cross vertically and horizontally. In the top left quadrant is the Union flag of the U.K. The left side has a strong canvas spine in which is mounted the sisal rope. The rope has a small length with loop at the top and a longer length with loop at the bottomThe bottom right quadrant, has these words stencilled on it..."In Appreciation from HMAS BENDIGO".
