The Cambridge Glass Company was chartered in 1873 by a group of Cambridge, Ohio businessmen. But it was not until 1899, when the site was purchased by the newly formed National Glass Company, that funds became available to start the construction of this new glass factory. n 1901, The Cambridge Glass Company was organized by the owners of the National Glass Company of Pennsylvania Arthur J. Bennett, a native of England, was hired to manage this new factory. Having experience in the china and glass trades. Many of the patterns were of Mr. Bennett's own design. Sometime around 1903-1904 the company's first trademark came into being, the words "Near Cut" pressed into the glass. Cambridge Glass soon became known worldwide for quality in both "crystal and colours, pressed and blown’. 1984. The National Cambridge Collectors purchased many of the moulds, all of the etching/decorating plates and other assets of Cambridge Glass from Imperial. The Cambridge Glass factory building was demolished in 1989A shallow factory made, frosted green glass vase. 'Close Knit' was conceived based around providing the high density accommodation of the area with what many residents will never experience; the iconic ‘Aussie’ backyard, symbolised by washing on a Hills Hoist. This concept was transposed into several elements, including two large flying jumper sculptures. These stainless steel and fibreglass structures are supported on slanted poles, reminiscent of Hills Hoist arms. The jumpers appear to catch the breeze, and billow up, like washing on the clothesline on a sunny day, and cast lovely shadows across the paths and gardens. They are bright and joyful reminders of simple homespun joys. The handcraft theme is also featured in knitted concrete garden walls throughout the gardens. As if the wind is captured in the movement of the Hellenistic drapery, these panels echo the Lady of Justice, an earlier work of mine on the Victorian County Court. These feature walls bring a softness to the park and hark back to classic European garden design. There are 6 finial/balls of wool marking gateways and entrances to the park, as well as a couple randomly scattered throughout to be discovered. There is also a draped plinth at the Peel street entrance which has my signature. Again these elements echo traditional garden design and are a tactile and recognizable link to the hand knit themes of the park. Given the strong themes of domesticity and handcrafts, I have titled my work ‘Close Knit’, as it applies to the purpose of this public space as well as the works scattered throughout. Yarra City Council delivered Cambridge Street Reserve in partnership with the Victorian Government, who have supported the project with $1.3m funding. Yarra City Council has invested a further $731,130 towards the project. Urban Imitative Landscape Design worked with artist William Eicholtz at the beginning of the design process to consider the needs of a growing high-density population of the area. At double the size, with extensive park seating and a large lawn space which is shaded by native trees, Cambridge Street Reserve is now the largest park in Collingwood. 'Close Knit' by William EicholtzTwo knitted fibreglass 'jumpers' over stainless steel framework; six concrete balls of wool throughout the park; 25 metres of cast (drapery) concrete walls; concrete plinth at Peel street entry which is draped with a concrete knit and a ball of wool on top as finial; reverse rope reliefs on the front façade of eastern stairs. Artist name and date 'William Eicholtz 2023' inscribed on plinth with ball of wool on top as finial. handcrafts, domesticity, aussie icons, european garden design, public space, high density accomodation

Hard cover book. The Life of Luther Author: M Michelet Translator: William Hazlitt Jr Publisher: Bell & Daldy & Co Date: 1872 Further Information: Green Cloth hardcover with lettering to spine in gilt. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.non-fictionThe Life of Luther, written by himself, is not a conventional biography but a compilation of Martin Luther's own words letters, table-talk, and passages drawn from his polemical and dogmatic writings selected, translated into French, arranged in roughly chronological order, and lightly stitched together with narrative commentary by Jules Michelet. It is a biography composed of a series of translations; except for the earliest years, which Luther could not narrate himself, the translator rarely needed to speak in his own voice. The English subject edition is Michelet's French compilation that was first published in Paris in 1835 as Mémoires de Luther, écrits par lui-même and rendered into English by William Hazlitt (1811–1893). The work traces Luther from his peasant origins and monastic life through his ordination, his journey to Rome, his "temptations" and inner spiritual crises, his break with the papacy, his marriage to the escaped nun Katharina von Bora, and his role at the centre of the Reformation, largely in his own recorded voice, framed by Michelet. Michelet composed the work almost entirely in 1828–29, publishing it in 1835. As the translator of Vico's Scienza Nuova, he felt a need at that time to move from theory to application, to study the general in the individual, history in biography, humanity in one man and Luther was his chosen vehicle: a man complete in thought and action, whose entire life, down to its smallest words and deeds, had been recorded.warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, the life of luther, m michelet

Hard cover book. Vera Author: Elizabeth von Arnim (Mary Annette Beauchamp) Publisher: MacMillan & Co Date: 1921 Further Information: Green Cloth hardcover with lettering and patterning to spine in black. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.fictionThe leading character is Lucy Entwhistle, a naive young woman, who marries the widower Everard Wemyss. His house is haunted by the memory of his dead first wife, Vera, whom Lucy suspects of suicide. She gradually realises that he demands total intellectual and emotional servitude. Both are reeling from recent loss when they meet and fall in love quickly. The novel draws on the author’s second marriage, to Frank Russell, and is closer to a nightmare than her usual humorous, romantic books. It is a study of coercive control and domestic tyranny, written as a black comedy.shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, warrnambool, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, book, vera
