The booklet prepared and printed by the German internees held in Camp 1, Tatura. The reproduction of the booklet was carried out on equipment in the office of the Camp Garrison, and copies of the booklet were made available to those internees within the camp and who were considered sympathetic to the German cause.The booklet tells the story of the internment of German Nationals in Australia from the German point of view. It also lists the names, internment number, dates of birth and capture, and the State where the capture took place. Johannes Oskar "Hans" Muhlhaus (centre front wearing dark shirt) with Raimond Kaufmann (front right wearing shorts) worked with Hans in England. Between them are Paul Wieting and/or Georg Erler. The man partly hidden between the rows is Walter Kiessling. Hans, an engineer, had been working in England since 1929, setting up and later managing a Manchester office of Siemens Schuckert GmbH which dealt with mining equipment. He later moved to Sheffield and in 1937 he met Nora, who he married in 1937. After the fall of France he and other people of German, Austrian and Italian origin were gathered up and interned in camps in Britain. On 2 July 1940 Hans was among 1200 German and Italian internees aboard the Arandora Star when it was torpedoed by German U Boat U-47; over 800 died in this incident which happened off the Irish coast. On 10 July he was sent to Australia aboard the Dunera, along with over 2500 internees. The voyage on the overcrowded ship was uncomfortable and difficult. Men who travelled on this ship became known as the Dunera Boys. During his period of internment in Tatura he taught English and engineering and kept up to date with mining engineering through books supplied by the Red Cross. Hans returned to Sheffield after the war but was not able to return to his previous job. He found employment at an engineering firm in Cornwall and stayed there until retirement. Book of theatre programmes made an internee in an Australian camp during WW2. Sent to the Museum by Andreas Benzing along with 2 spare copies of 2 programmes and a postcard from Italy. Erich Erwin Heinz Neumann was a German civilian internee in Camp 1, Tatura, during WWII. He was an artist & this portrait, although unfinished, was of another internee, a Count, (name currently unknown), in the same camp. Else Oertel was a German internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. Woodworking was popular amongst the internees and it is probable that another internee in camp 3 made the buckle for Else. The inscription in the brick was made by Lanzinger a German internee who escaped several times from Camp 1, recaptured and placed in Camp 4 gaol. The brick was recovered by the Stanhope Museum, where it is now on display. The curator of the Museum contacted Tatura Museum for information about Lanzinger, and was advised that Lanzinger's daughter ( Ann Flegel) had visited Tatura Museum and Camp 1, from Canada. A photo of the brick was forwarded from Stanhope to Flegels, who in turn forwarded it to Josef Friedrich whom she had made contact with through the Tatura Museum.
