This memorial commemorates the historic siege of Tobruk. The memorial is based on the one in the Tobruk War Cemetery, built by Royal Australian Engineers during the siege. That memorial has since been destroyed. The original marble inscription stone was brought back to Australia after the war and is incorporated in the obelisk in Canberra. The memorial was unveiled on 13 April 1983 by the Governor-General of Australia, Sir Ninian StephenThis item is part of a collection of items owned by Arthur lock, a member of the 2/23rd Battalion, an all-volunteer Second Australian Imperial Force which served as part of the garrison during the Siege of Tobruk, then at El Alamein, New Guinea and Borneo. It has particular local significance as the battalion was know as "Albury's Own" because a large majority of the battalion's initial intake of volunteers came from the Albury–Wodonga region. The Shine Dome is one of seven projects that the Royal Australian Institute of Architects has nominated to the World Register of Significant Twentieth Century Architecture. In 1956 six architects were invited to submit plans for the Academy of Science's new building in Canberra and the Academy's building design committee selected Grounds Romberg and Boyd's proposal designed by Roy Grounds. It features a shallow arcaded concrete dome, sheeted in copper and was one of a number of domed buildings that appeared around this time internationally, expressing the optimism of the post-war years. It perfectly reflected the Academy's ambition to champion excellence in Australian science and promote international scientific engagement. Paul Wallace, a well-known Melbourne renderer, drew this perspective of the proposed design, possibly for the competition submission, in 1956.Coloured perspective of the Academy of Science buiding in Canberra.Printed text on attached sticker, 'ACADEMY OF SCIENCE, CANBERRA / 1958 / Grounds, Romberg and Boyd, / Architects'. Colourful souvenir mugs and cups were manufactured in Britain by Aynsley China and carefully transported to Australia for the opening of Parliament House in May 1927. Aynsley China was established in Staffordshire, England in 1775. Parliament House in Canberra was officially opened on 9 May 1927 by the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth). The opening of the Parliament House (now called Old Parliament House) marked the culmination of the Federation process, with the occupation of the new federal capital of the Commonwealth of Australia and the transfer of the federal legislature to Canberra after 27 years in Melbourne. The rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne over which should be Australia's national capital led to the decision to establish a new capital city. Section 125 of the Australian Constitution stated the national capital must be located in New South Wales but not within 100 miles of Sydney. In the meantime, the Australian Parliament met in Melbourne at the Victorian Parliament House. The event was marked by extensive celebrations, and thousands of people gathered to see the Duke of York open the main door with a golden key handed to him by Prime Minister Stanley Melbourne Bruce. This item is significant as a souvenir of an important event in the development of Australian government. An Aynsley porcelain cup manufactured in England around 1927 to commemorate the opening of the Federal Parliament House in Canberra. It features a kangaroo in a cartouche formed of laurel leaves with a blue bow connecting each arm of the cartouche. An album containing photographs, articles and ephemera from the ceremony for the unveiling of the Australian Service Nurses National Memorial in Canberra, October 2nd 1999. "The Australian Service Nurses National Memorial, designed by Sydney-based sculptor Robin Moorhouse, commemorates the role of more than 10,000 Australian service nurses who have served in times of war, including 102 who died while on active service. The Memorial is constructed from translucent blue glass and has the words ‘Beyond all praise’ on the front. It consists of two curvilinear glass walls which are etched with text and images, in a timeline sequence, portraying the history and contribution of Australian Service Nursing. Also included is a collage of historical photographs and extracts from diaries and letters, in the original handwriting. Included on the west side of the memorial are the insignias of the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force. Unveiled on 2 October 1999, the ceremony was attended by over 1000 nurses, some from World War II who were in their 80s. A fly past by the Royal Australian Air Force Roulettes and royal salutes by officers from all defence services were included in the ceremony. A march by nurses carrying 102 Australian flags in memory of the nurses who fell in service plus one other flag in memory of civilian nurses who had lost their lives was also included. Other nurses wore vintage uniforms from previous war campaigns and wreaths were placed at the foot of the memorial by several dignitaries, service and civilian nursing groups from across Australia." [taken from The Australian Women's Register website].Cream coloured, Australian themed photo album with a Waratah flower, a gumnut and a gumleaf on the cover. A large white label in the top left reads 'Nurses Memorial Canberra'. The album contains plastic photo pockets and inner margins for annotations. This medal was made by W.J.Amor Mint, a medal making company from New South Wales. It was made to commemorate both the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Canberra in 1963 and the Royal Visit of 1963. Because of the rivalry between the two major Australian cities, Melbourne and Sydney, it was decided to establish a new capital city somewhere between the two cities. The Australian capital Territory was established in 1913 and the American architect, Walter Burley Griffin, in association with his wife, Marion Mahony Griffin, was chosen to design the new city of Canberra. The first Parliament House was opened in 1927 and Melbourne ceased to be the location of the Federal Parliament meetings. This medal is of interest, mainly because it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first Parliament House in Canberra and the establishment of Canberra as Australia's capital city.Circular brass medal with ring attached at the top and a split ring through the ring.
