This is the original Caretakers or Curators cottage which was built for the first Botanical Gardens curator, George Longley (1858 - 1899) and his family. George and his family, after being made Gardener, moved to the Surveyors Camp where they lived in a tent. The Caretaker's cottage was built to replace the original 1927 hut, which had been built with left over stone from the tower. There was a desire to expand the size of the hut to make provision for a married caretaker. The Ballarat School of Mines was the first of its type in Australia. The Albert Street frontage was the 'working end' of the campus with the mining laboratory, gauge tower and caretakers cottage. All the structures in the foreground have been demolished to make way for the Flecknoe Building and the M.B. John Building. Harry Brew, the well known Ballarat School of Mines caretaker, lived in the small weatherboard building to the right of the photograph. The Ballarat School of Mines building along Albert Street were moved or demolished to make way for the new Engineering Workshop. The school's high profile music program has run successfully for 10 years since Mr Neil Berry, who taught students to play brass instruments, started the first concert band. Further advancements were made under former classroom teachers, Judith Curphey, who is National Artistic Director of the Australian Girls' Choir and Jan Constable, organiser of the Melbourne Youth Music Council. Annual band tours, enjoyed by the students, also help the music department's excellent retention rate.
